According to the rules, there is no money in the middle. Money paid in for Community Chest and Chance cards goes into the bank. Putting the money in the middle and getting it when landing on free parking is what's called a "house rule" that somehow caught on man, many places and people think is an actual rule of Monopoly. We always played that way. Therefor, if you want to play that way, go right ahead, just make sure everyone playing knows this rule.

The directions say nothing about it, but I have been playing monopoly forever and that is how I have always played it. It makes the game more fun.
