Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married at the time of the Annunciation when the angel came to ask Mary to have God's Son.

They were married soon after and long before the birth of Jesus.

With love in Christ.

According to the Gospel according to Luke, which gives the most information, Joseph was engaged to be married to Mary, when she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit; they had not had sex, and did not have sex before she gave birth to Jesus. Joseph, reassured by an angel, married Mary even though she was pregnant and not by him. People around them apparently assumed that Joseph was the father.
Whether she remained virgin after Jesus was born is not stated, and is a subject of disagreement. The Roman Catholic Church and many others say that she remained a virgin all her life, and never had sex with Joseph. Others say that they went on to have other children together. There is at least one reference in the gospels to Jesus' "siblings," but the word used was also used to refer to cousins, so this is not conclusive.
In any case, she was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus, and this is why she is called the Virgin Mary.

Joseph was Mary's husband. But Mary became conceived with Jesus BEFORE she actually "married" Joseph. Therefore, she was a virgin.
After Jesus was born and all, Mary bore Joseph's children (brothers of Jesus)
All these incidents are in the first 2 chapters of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

I hope this clarifies everything!

The Jewish marriage customs were different then than we may be used to nowadays. Basically, a woman would be pledged to be married to a man (as Mary was pledged to Joseph), and the man would leave and build a house and establish a livelihood, and then return to take her with him. They would not engage in sexual relations before they were living together in their own home, however. When the angel Gabriel came to Mary, she was "pledged to be married" to Joseph. When he found out that she was pregnant, he considered "divorcing her quietly" -- to break off the pledge -- because he knew that the child was not his, and wanted to give her the opportunity to be married to the baby's father. However, the angel came to him and reassured him that Mary had not been unfaithful and it was okay to marry her.
He took care of her and protected her, but they did not have sexual relations until after Jesus was born, so at the time that Jesus was born, she was still a virgin.

Joseph was Mary's Husband. According to the early Christian teachings Joseph remained Mary's chaste spouse. According to the early Church's teachings Mary remained a virgin.

There is an ancient manuscript called the protogospel of James. In it there is a story of Joseph and Mary and how they got married. Joseph was an older man, he was a widower who already had children from his first marriage. Mary was an adolescent girl living in the temple. The temple priests saw she was coming of marriageable age so they picked a husband for her. Joseph was at first reluctant, why would an old man have a young wife? Joseph had to be convinced by the priests, and so he took her as her protector and chaste spouse.

Mary was an honourable and humble servant of God. She and Joseph were not married at the time she became pregnant. She was promised to Joseph or engaged. If Jesus were the son of Joseph then He would not be the son of God. The bloodline from Adam would be in Jesus and He would be a sinner like you and I. Mary was "betrothed" to Joseph. This is similar to a modern engagement. It usually lasted about 1 year. The Jews were very strict on sex before marriage. Mary was impregnated by her belief in what God said. Joseph was not the "seed" father of Jesus.

Joseph was Mary's husband but only after the conception and birth of Jesus...before Christ's birth..."they were husband and wife in every regard except the way that would lead to children"....but this was really only a betrothal....after Jesus was born, they went on to have several children...Good question by the way!

Joseph was her husband....she is the virgin Mary, because she was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus... Jesus is not his biological child.. :o)

Traditionally, it was considered that even though they were married, that marriage was never consummated. The other "brethren" of Jesus mentioned in the New Testament would then have been cousins or other close relatives (referring to such close relatives as "brothers" was common in Jesus' cultural milieu).

Whether you think Joseph was really Jesus' father depends on how you read the NT text. For conservative readers, of course, Joseph had nothing to do with Jesus' conception. Those who read the NT through a more mythographic lens -- who see such patently mythological elements as the virgin birth as being a later theological construct, and not an authentic historical account -- will of course have a different opinion. I guess you have to make up your own mind.
