I hate when people give me a gift and I didn't ask for one which means I FEEL obligated to give one back. I think christmas is just to commercial and there is absolutely no reason to give gifts. The only reason this holiday is like it is is because companies shove it down our throats because this is the time of the year they make or break. Make alot of money and break you. When I give a gift to someone if I really like them and think it is something they would really like I always tell them the reason I bought it and I do not want any gift back so they won't feel obligated. For some reason they still buy something anyway then I feel guilty because they probably wouldn't have ever bought it if I hadn't bought them anything. I don't buy anything now at all and make sure I let everyone know don't get me anything I already have enough stuff. Or if they insist I tell them to give me 5 lotto picks and that would make me happy enough.

When someone gives you an unexpected gift they are not expecting a gift in return. My teenage daughter was telling me of one of her girlfriends that had found out she was receiving an expensive gift from her boyfriend. The girl was perplexed because she couldn't afford to match the gift. I explained to her that the boyfriend didn't expect a gift in return of the same value. Any gift would please him, the less expensive the better. I don't know all the circumstances involved with your question. There is no right or wrong answer. If it is in your heart to purchase a gift then do so. If you are purchasing it just to return the favor so to speak, then I would say you would be wrong to do so. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

If someone gave me a gift without reason, I will not rush to reciprocate, I'll wait for a reason to do that. Receiving a gift from someone without reason, is most of the time embarrassing.

Gift giving is voluntary. It should not be considered a necessity. It could even be a hardship for many on a tight budget. I appreciate kind wishes equally as much as I would a gift. It is the thought that counts.

No, if someone just up and gives you a gift for no apparent reason, then it's ok to not return the favor. Though, if it's a major holiday, birthday, etc...then you should make an effort to return the favor the following year.

No reason?? They probably had a reason to spend time and/or money on you. You should be grateful and graciously say thank you. You are not obligated to reciprocate a gift--then it would not be a 'gift' but an exchange.

No, don't give a gift back right away. They will think you give to them because they gave to you.

Just say thank you.

I give little gifts to my sister in law through out the year. I never expect anything in return, however, every now and then she surprises me with something she saw and thought I would enjoy.

A thank you card would be the nicest reciprocate. Sometimes, it's important to just let other people be nice. It makes them feel good. A thank you card shows you acknowledge and appreciate their kindness.
