In some cases people don't take the time to enunciate the words, and then they take their spelling from that. For instance my son made a film the other day and put in credits. He spelt 'camera' as 'camra'. It's not hard to figure out how he got that spelling, because a lot of people say it that way. Learn to say the word correctly and they might even spell it correctly. Notice I said might, because in a nut shell, the English language is abominable for grammar rules and exceptions which result in different pronunciations for the same letter, or similar pronunciations for different letters.
Of course you can clean up the language if you want, but human nature being what it is (lazy by default) you will still end up with bastardized spellings because it's easier.

Pet peeves of the English language? Wow, you've got me started.
-they're, their, there and your/you're. They're as different as night and day. Unless you don't think those are different.
-Adding extra consonants to the end of words excessively (omggg, whateverrrr, likeee, laterr). It gets a bit annoying after a while.
-An old favorite: "LyK oNg He JuSt AsKd MeE oUtTtT hEz SoOo HaWt!!!1"
-misspelling words on purpose. "lyke, onggg, teh, ur," Get the latest edition of Webster's or use the spell check.
-Putting apostrophes in plural nouns. "I love your cat's! They're so cute!" ah-hem NO. I'm such a grammar freak.
I would continue to rant, but I have to go to the store :)
And I know it's difficult not to have any spelling errors in a document, especially when you're posting on a forum or answering a question. Normally I don't care about misspellings online or anything. But if it's for a professional document in class or something, it's basically crucial to check your grammar and language.

The single and worst & most horrifying error is when I see in print, and also in the stores and streets, EVERYWHERE I GO - this grammatical error:
Ignorant people write a noun - and then instead of adding a simple "S" at the end - they feel compelled to write an apostrophe before the "S".
Example: Doctor - plural is: Doctors
But they write for the plural: Doctor's
I cannot understand the reasoning behind this error. There is none.

My pet peeve within the confines of the English language is the use of "u" in place of the word "you." It is not a long word, just type the whole thing. Excellent question.

My pet peeve is very pacific. It involves people trying to use one word and using another word with a TOTALLY different meaning that sounds slightly similar.

Spelling and grammer have gone by the wayside. People don't seem to care anymore. It is really irritating when people treat YOU like the idiot when you don't know what all the "text speak" means...
The one that bugs me the most is thanx, you lose ONE letter, whats the point?
