I'm serious. I would love to get one, but I heard they smell weird. How about beagles?

No breed "smells wierd" its all in their diet and how much grooming and bathing they get.

Bloodhounds need a job, they are very focused and driven dogs, so if you arn't willing/can't do a doggie sport like Field Trials or Tracking with him (what they are bred for), then its best to get a more low-key dog :-)

Before I got my bloodhound, I read that they smell "houndy". I asked what does that mean. But I got my bloodhound anyway. I quickly found out what "houndy" means. It is a very strong and bad dog smell. If she is not bathed once a week. I notice it because she has to be kept indoors. That was the agreement I made when I adopted her. It was a mistake. She is very high maintenance. She sheds ALOT, smells strongly like a "hound", and paces around because she wants to be OUTSIDE. She is a hunting dog and no matter what we humans do, that is what she will be. Since she paces all over the house looking to go outside, dog hair is everywhere, can't get away from the smell, and if we bath her once a week to try getting rid of the first two problems, she gets dry skin! Err! The adoption place saw me coming! They had some kind of smell good oil on her that didn't wear off for a couple of days! So, I didn't know what her true smell was for about a week. Oh, and since she is so large and a hunter, she will do what ever she wants! She is not good on a leash and will drag the person walking her anywhere that SHE wants to go! My thoughts to anyone thinking about a bloodhound, BEWARE! They are outdoor dogs and should be in an area where they can explore freely.

Like the last answer, if it smells like a dog, looks like a dog, and sounds like a dog, it's a dog. If you've found a bloodhound (or any breed) that has an unusually vile odor to it, it very well could be sick. Some illnesses have odors to them like parvo, corona virus, ect. and infections have a very distinct smell. Puppies have the run of the mill (no pun intended) puppy breath but will dental care it goes away. If you are worried about the conditions the dog currently lives in then you might want to keep shopping. Good Luck.

Most scent hounds have a distinctive smell but its not unbearable. They actually just have a stronger doggie smell but its not like a dirty dog smell. You can get dry powder dog shampoos and if you just brush that thru every couple of days it makes it less obvious. Plus make sure you get the dog to love baths and water and it wont be so bad.

All dogs smell like dogs. They need a bath about once a month, more if they get into something stinky. If you don't like the smell of a dog, don't get one.

my experience with hounds is that they can have a smell, especially when you get them upset.

ALL DOGS HAVE THEIR SCENT. HOUNDS DO HAVE A DIFFERENT SCENT FROM OTHER DOGS. BUT IT ISN'T BAD YOU GET USED TO IT.
