Take a deep breath and look in the other direction. My little grandson who is only 2 years old has to get his blood drawn once a month because of a disorder he has. He doesn't like it, but now he just rolls up his sleeve, sticks his arm out with a grin, and looks for the candy when its done. Don't get yourself too worked up about what is really a simple procedure that thousands, if not millions, of people have done everyday.

I absolutely HATE having my blood done, but after having a4 kids, and being very sick in my teens, I had to learn quickly how to manage. Here is what i do:

get an interesting story or article in a magazine. I like readers digest, cuz some are funny and help to lighten the mood, and take the edge off my fear.

Just before the nurse starts, I look the other way, and start reading out loud. Keep reading out loud till they are done. Focus just on that story, and reading it out loud.

Also, let the nurse know, you don't like this, but you are working on making her job easier. Ask if they can use a syringe instead of changing the tubes (if you need more than one sample). See if you can apply a lidocaine product or ambesol to numb the area first, if the pain is what you finding upsetting. Ask them to work with you to find a solution.

You need to relax! I know some people have a fear of needles, my daughter is one. But she does not freak out, she just faints. If you are going to be restrained, they will probably place your arms in restraints so you can't move your arms. I don't like to have my blood drawn, but it is just a little needle poke and really does not hurt. Look away from the nurse when she is getting ready to take the blood and keep breathing deeply, but SLOWLY. You don't want to hyperventilate. If you lay real still and try to stay as calm as you can, she will be done in less than 30 seconds.

no need to get so upset. are you scared it will hurt?

if so, ask the dr for lidocaine. it is a prescription cream that will numb your arm. they give it to my little boy, who just turned 4, because he has to get needles & bloodwork quite a bit due to his allergy/asthma problems.

you just rub the lidocaine on your arm about 30 minutes before you go in a thick layer and wrap your arm in saran wrap. by the time you get there it will be completely numb. they will take off the saran wrap, wipe off your arm and draw the blood. you will not feel a thing. you can tell your numb because it tingles like when you get novacaine at the dentist and when you pinch your arm you cant feel it. :) :) :)

if it is just the idea of the blood being drawn they can give you a pill to calm you down, of course you won't be able to drive yourself. you can take a xanax or valium and it will make you not care. again, you need to ask your dr and get a prescription. they give this to my grandmother when she has to get certain procedures done...cortisone shots and other arthritis procedures.

good luck. it is no big deal! SD

Tell the nurse or phlebotomist that drawing blood frightens you. They can help you. Be sure to look away--don't watch them take your blood.

LISTEN......I KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT DONE ----THEY WILL TIE YOUR ARMS DOWN SO THEY CAN GET IN A VEIN......IT'LL BE OVER IN A BLINK.........WHEN IT'S DONE GO TREAT YOURSELF TO SOMETHING YOU LOVE......I'D SAY TAKE A VALIUM BUT THAT WOULD SCREW UP YOUR BLOOD RESULTS.....GOOD LUCK SWEETIE
