Lillian - it's a bit scary that your first ever question on "answers" is "what causes suicide". If you're feeling down, the best thing to do is to talk to people. Suicide often results from Depression - it's a chemical imbalance in your brain, often caused by feeling unable to cope with everything life throws at you...... but it is treatable - suicide is never an option. Life is precious and you need to make sure you recognise in yourself and in those closest to you, those behaviours which indicate depression and please, please, make sure that if you or your friends indicate any kind of anti-social behavious (sadness, not wanting to go out, staying at home alone all the time, being withdrawn, angry, upset, crying, violent) - seek help, please. LIFE IS WONDERFUL when you're not suffering from depression.

Did you mean suicide? There is no "cause" to suicide, but there are many events, situations, and other things that can lead a person to "commit" suicide. Such as severe depression, anixieties, loss of a loved one, and drug abuse among many other things.

This website gives a list of "signs" of depression/suicidal:
http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/Helpline1/Suicide_-_Learn_more,_learn_to_help.htm

And this is a good site for getting help and more information:

As always, if you or anyone you know is struggling with this issue contact someone knowledge, like a teacher, counselor, officer, etc. who can find the resource you need.

Alot of it is due to depression, feeling unwanted and unloved, unhappy with life in general, being hurt either phsyical or mentally, feeling worthless, useless... Feeling that the whole world is against you and that everything you seem to say and do isn't working out... They look at things in a tunnel so to speak and can't seem to get this picture out of their heads and can't seem to see answers to their problems....

My best friend was depressed due to broken hearted by his ex-girlfriend, debt, and the loss of his Mother... No matter what solution was offered to him to resolve the problems he had, no matter how many people was there for him he couldn't see the end of the tunnel... He was completely focused on suicide was the only way out for him.... To be honest his problems where so small to us but huge to him.... His problems were solvable however he couldn't seem to except the solutions that everyone offered as to him he'd already made up his mind....

Depression is a weird thing that will take over if you let it, it can be controlled and your problems seem so huge that they seem to get bigger and bigger each day.... My friends problems had solutions but his mind was set and very clouded by his depression.... If he'd seen the amount of people that came to his funeral and how many people cared and loved him, he always thought he only had a few friends when in fact 256 came to his funeral to say goodbye.... He was such a very kind, gentle person with so much potential, good personality and had so much going for him.... It was a complete shock to us all for him taking his life, that we all didn't think he would have comtemplated it, we thought he was strong and full of life.... He was a firefighter, very sporty and no way showed his depression... We knew that he was upset about things but none of us had any idea that he'd do something lilke he did.... It was a complete waste of life, and is now still sincerely missed 9 years after his death....

If you're contemplating it remember the people answering this question care and care about you otherwise they wouldn't have answered you.... You're problems may seem big if it's you that contemplating it don't do it as the problems you have aren't as bad as you think.... Talk to someone, it's usually a cry for help as you can't see any other solution.... But indeed solutions are there you just need to be pointed in the right direction and need help... Seek that help and you'll realise that your problems later won't seem as bad and you'll be glad not to have done it....

Everyone has probably been depressed once or twice in their lives... I know I have and totally am thankful that I didn't take my life 20 years ago when I was sincerely thinking about it.... I was upset and hurt by a relationship of someone I thought I loved but infact if I knew what I knew now about love then it definitely wasn't love but infatuation... I'm now happily married to a very good loving man and have been with my husband 17 years now with 2 children... If I had done what I was thinking back then I wouldn't have what I have got today, nor would my children have existed....

Please seek help if you're feeling this way truely it'll be the best thing you can do, go and see your doctor or call someone you can find loads of organisations out there to help you through your problems and get you through it.... They say it's the cowards way out, but until you've been there it's not but then again it is.... Facing your problems no matter how small is a huge achievement and satisfaction in resolving them.... It'll boost your confidence and make you feel better that you've done something positive whilst feeling negative about a lot of things.... It'll take time I can't promise it'll be an over night thing but help is a round the corner if you look for it....

Take care and people do care. I do....

It is estimated that, in the United States, an average of six people are "survivors" of each suicide[15]. However, this may grossly underestimate the number of people who are affected. For example, the suicide of a child may leave the school and their entire community left to make sense of the loss.
As with any death, family and friends of a suicide victim feel grief associated with loss. Suicide survivors are often overwhelmed with psychological trauma as well, given that most suicides occur suddenly and without warning. This trauma can leave survivors feeling guilty, angry, remorseful, helpless, and confused. It can be especially difficult for survivors because many of their questions as to why the victim felt the need to take his or her own life are left unanswered. Moreover, survivors often feel that they have failed or that they should have intervened in some way. Given these complex sets of emotions associated with a loved one's suicide, survivors usually find it difficult to discuss the death with others, causing them to feel isolated from their own network of family and friends and often making them reluctant to form new relationships as well. [16].
"Survivor groups" can offer counseling and help bring many of the issues associated with suicide out into the open. They can also help survivors reach out to their own friends and family who may be feeling similarly and thus begin the healing process. In addition, counseling services and therapy can provide invaluable support to the bereaved. Some such groups can be found online, providing a forum for discussion amongst survivors of suicide (see Support Groups for Survivors section below).
As well as providing counseling for the grief-stricken, survivor groups have also attempted to change the language used to describe suicide. Believing that the term "commit" attaches criminal implications to suicide, they have pushed for alternative terms that remove this meaning including "attempting" suicide, or "died by" suicide[citation needed].

Suicide? Could be hereditary. Could be a continuous bout of depression. Could be an accumulation of unresolved issues.
