I heard that they are all Irish and they don't like black people. I saw the Departed and they were all Irish.

You won't be disqualified because of your ethnicity. The hiring requirements are the same for all applicants. So, for instance, if you have been convicted of a felony, it doesn't matter if you're a Martian-American you can't be hired. The law says so. If you have a chip on your shoulder, and it sounds like you may because this is an odd question, you may have some difficulty getting hired.

Most law enforcement agencies WANT qualified black, brown, yellow, red, female applicants. The theory is, the more the department looks like the community it represents, the better the community will participate. We NEED the community to do our job. To do it well we need dedicated people. Is that you?

If it is, and I am wrong about the possible chip on your shoulder, it is the most rewarding career you can choose. No 2 days are ever the same. Ever.

Find out the requirements and if you meet them, go for it. Keep in mind, on average 1 applicant out of 100 actually gets hired. Even with thorough background investigations a problem officer still slips in periodically.

PS. You may be confusing the police with the fire department in Los Angeles!! It's LA Co FIRE that doesn't like black fire fighters!!

Affirmative Action should help you out on this one... (not in a bad way, though)
They pretty much need black officers. Just think what would have happened in NY of none of those shooting officers were black? Rodney King all over again! After having worked in the ghetto, I firmly believe that minorities have more respect for black officers, and they will force an 'issue' with white officers, and play the race card. Almost every big city has plenty of jobs for any race. I do not think that very many HR departments/hiring directors have a slanted eye these days. I have seen many 'minority' officers in my area, and they often times seem to be the smartest. But of course you need education and probably some security guard job before becoming an officer...

What you see in the movies does NOT represent REAL LIFE, it is make believe trash. I don't think you will have any trouble. There are a lot of fine black police officers in every police department around the U.S.

It should not be a problem, even if it is you go for it any way, Work hard, and don't give up. Don't let some racist pigs..(no pun intended) stop you from your dreams. Anyone who still thinks that way, and are racist, will get what they deserve in the end. If any thing you may change their views on African Americans. Show them up!! Its sad that even now, their are a**holes out there still living in the 1800's (it wasn't right back then and it sure as hell isn't right now.)Good Luck.

Depends on the PD but affermitive action has made it alot easier for minoritys to be hired. I know that we have several black officers here in mesquite,Tx and a vast amount in Dallas so I'd say you should be fine bro just as long as you have a clean rep, etc, ect.

From what I've seen, if you qualify with your backgrounds, pass your orals, and la de da.......you are at an ADVANTAGE with your race. In fact, I've seen departments that purposely choose the minority over a caucasion.

And I am not saying that is bad nor good. I believe a well rounded police department is HUGELY beneficial to society!

You've got to be kidding me. Why don't you worry about your qualifications rather than your skin color? That has got to be one of the most ridiculous questions I've seen here. I conducted background investigations for a law enforcement agency in the south US and paid no attention to the color of the individual applying for the job. If you are going to be a police officer you need to get over your own racial issues.

There's as many or more black officers on the police force here as there are white.
Color is not an issue... Character is.

Just your asking that question disturbs me. That is like my asking if being a female would prohibit me from becoming an officer. (which it didn't)

Stop watching so many cop movies and I'd advise to throw the race card in the garbage.

no, I do hope this question is a joke or just a racist post. I can't believe anyone would think race matters when becoming a police officer
