Yes there are plenty! Visity your local Hancock Fabric's they actually have kits for it. I have seen them at Michael's and MJD Designs every now and then.

As an experienced knitter and crocheter - I don't think you will be making socks and sweaters any time soon. That takes a level of experience a beginner doesn't have. My sister and I knit baby hats. Have an easy pattern that can be done up in a couple of hours. Easy patterns can be found on the internet. We have made hundreds. Donate them to local hospital for the newborns. Have received thank you cards from the nurses and the new mommies. Nurses have even offered to take up a collection to buy the yarn. The new mommies love them compared to the basic white hats given by the hospital. We make bright colors - not always pastel. Do stripes sometimes. Have done some in local high school and professional football colors. Have done red and white for Christmas - or December babies. Red, white and blue stripes for 4th of July babies. We do this because we love to knit - have knitted and crocheted for years - and we certainly don't need any more hats and scarves and afghans ourselves. Nor does our family want any more. You can also knit/crochet adult hats and scarves to donate to shelters. Hat and scarf patterns are generally very easy and can be done up in a short amount of time. So this would give you experience and a level of expertise - while doing a good deed at the same time. Good luck to you.
