A malinois is like a smaller version of a Shepard. They tend to be a little more high strung a temperamental than Shepard's. If you are looking for one, defiantly look for an adult, especially if you don't have a large amount of experience with dogs.

They are both used in military and police work. The german shepherd is quite a bit larger than the belgian malinois. I personally prefer the temperment of the belgian malinois- they are a little more laid back but just as good in the working world. The coat of the german shepherd is quite a bit coarser than that of the belgian malinois and I think that the bm is a more attractive dog. Just personal preference.

Of course there are differences because they are different breeds, individual dogs, they're ALL different. It does depend on the owner, and the training. I don't feel as though Malanois are any more "aggressive" than a German Shepherd. They are trained Police dogs used for work. All dogs need a strong leader, especially the powerful breeds. Belgians all have their own personalities. Different displays of dominance or behaviors. They are all different. They are not aggressive breeds by nature.

They are different breeds which look similar. A Belgian Malinos normally will have a darker and a slightly longer coat than a German Shepherd.

Belgian Malinois-the coat should be comparatively short straight, hard enough to be weather resistant with dense undercoat &very short on the head, ears & lower legs and somewhat longer around the neck where it forms a collareth and on the tail and back of the thighs. the German Shepherd.= The ideal dog has a double coat of medium lengh, outher coat should be as dense as possible, hair straight, harsh and lying close to the body a slightly wavy outher coat. the head & inner ear & foreface & legs, paws are covered with short hair the neck with longer and thicker hair the rear forelegs&hind legs some what longer hair. I hope this help you some.

many folks who loved the German Shepherd Dog [GSD]
started purchasing Malinois
because of the GSDs losing their original working dog characteristics
thanks to folks who breed for looks

have you SEEN GSDs lately? Many look crippled by the outrageous hunchback overangulated rear ends

now Malinois will prob be the next dog to get 'wrecked' by conformation breeders
who care less about working ability
than looks
the old form/function thang

sorry I ramble
Belgian Malinois are smaller and much more athletic
and their looks have been secondary to their working ability...

but that is changing here in the states anyway
as many breed to make some bucks

Go to any security dog &/or police dog site and you will see many more Malinois vs. GSDs

BUT
what a lot of folks who THINK they need a 'working' dog
don't realize
that withOUT work
a Malinois can be outrageously destructive---as can any working/athletic animal
with no WORK/exercise can.

most of the dogs in this pic are Malinois

They are two types of Shepherds with slight differences in build. A Belgian Shepherd often has longer legs, shorter tail..
Here is a look at both:

They're two distinct breeds - different histories - bred for different purposes. Check the breed standards at www.akc.org.
