The SS (schutz staffel) was composed of the General SS (not sure of the German spelling) and the Waffen SS (armed SS). They were originally an elite bodyguard for you know who. Eventually when their services were needed, they were used as regular soldiers along side the Wehrmacht. The Wehrmacht were the regular German army.

The German Army, or the Wehrmacht, were the regular army of Germany - its national army, which had always been there. If you consider that all Germans were Nazis in Germany under the Nazi regime, then yes they were Nazis. And when entering the army, soldiers swore an oath of allegiance personally to Hitler. The SS were more like Hitlers personal army - it was originally the SA or Brownshirts, but soon after Hitler came to power it changed to the SS. The SS were much more elite than the SA and the Wehrmacht, comprising mostly of young strong men with a strong Aryan bloodline, and usually blond hair and bue eyes. As the elite, they were also encouraged to have many children, even with mistresses, by being given promotions and the like. They ran the concentration camps, but some SS units did also fight with the regular army.

The SS was a branch of the Nazi Party and was not part of the Wehrmacht or the German armed forces which consisted of:
Heer (Army)
Kriegsmarine (Navy)
Luftwaffe (Air Force)
These organizations were placed under the command of the Ober Kommando der Wehrmacht "OKW" (High command of the Wehrmacht.)
The SS did field an army known as the Waffen-SS but was not an official branch of the Wehrmacht but at the front came under it's tactical command.

The SS were the elite soldiers. Fanatical, dedicated. They started out as body guards for Adolph Hitler, and eventually grew to be a very large force. They also handled the concentration camps.
