i'm spanish speaker, but have to say that spanish is not "the most" important lang in the world. We love it, bcoz is our language, but we cant cheat ourselves about that.
Of course is the 2nd spoken lang in USA but not over the world.
You know? I dont care how many pple speak it. I care that each day, most pple from USA have to learn it bcoz are losing good business for not knowing it.
That's good, slowly , they are realizing that need to learn it.
So....dont worry about if spanish is the most spoken or not, let's try to keep our lang in the best spoken way all over our countries.

I've lived in many South American countries and Spain and am very familiar with the Spanish language although I've only heard of one place in Africa where it is spoken regularly. I agree that the U.S. should get with the program. Most European countries push a second language very heavily (granted its English) and the U.S. should at least push harder for more secondary language education in schools. What better language that Spanish? I think a good start is electing a president who speaks another language. How about Bill Richardson from New Mexico? But no matter what English is still the world's most important language and makes the world go 'round.

Actually, English is the most important language in the world. It is the only international language. Airline pilots all over the world only speak English. This is required everywhere. Also, I have been to China several times and was pleased to see that the signs in China are in Chinese and English-that is all! China the biggest country population wise on earth has realized this fact and has required all of their school children to learn English. And furthermore, I doubt that Spain could force the USA to do anything. I have been to Spain and enjoyed the country but it is hardly a world power. Perhaps more people should learn Spanish though, from what I understand they only have a few thousand words so it is probably not that difficult.

Actually, more people do speak more Chinese than Spanish, due to population. But since there are alot of Spanish speakers in the US, it would definately be more helpful for everyone to know it. If the US is "so into diversity and different cultures" then could start out by making it so we dont have an official language.
PS- The only reason we EVEN speak English in America is because of all the foreigners that came over. So dont even start with the "Learn English or Get out" B.S.

I would say Spanish. Spanish is much more useful since 21 countries have Spanish as there official language. People who know Spanish get paid more too for this reason.

Ehhhh...I'd have to say that Spanish is not the most important.
English is. It's spoken by most people worldwide as a second language too.
Spanish is only the official language of one tiny nation in Africa (Equatorial Guinea) and Philippines is the only one that also speaks it in Asia. Spanish is only very important if you live in the Americas where most people speak Spanish.
If you don't speak English, learn English before Spanish. Definitely.
French is also rather important since France also owned a lot of land at one point and influenced French on them. Arabic is also becoming very important.

Is it the most important? I'm thinking that Mandarin Chinese wins out. Should we force THAT in the US? Actually the Chinese are learning English. I don't dispute, however, that Spanish should be offered as a second language. I studied French for five years and now I live in Mexico! Wasn't that five years a waste of time. Back to the drawing board...

I do not believe in forcing any thing on any one.
I am Spanish, and to me English is the most important language to learn.
we(USA) teach Spanish in our high school's as an elective.
And I know that school in Spain,Puerto Rico,Cuba are getting with the program and are teaching English.
It be nice if we all can speak a few different language's just not anything forced

Most Important Language ? From where do you derive this ? No, I'm SERIOUS... where do you derive this information / conclusion ??
English is still the language of navigation, aviation, and commerce (and also computers). French is the language of State. German was once the language of Chemistry. I'd imagine CHINESE is the most populace language
Spain can "FORCE" the USA to teach spanish in the US schools right after the liberals pry my gun from my cold dead fingers. And I live in California...
Seriously though... Castillian spanish which most MEXICAN's can't speak properly ? And we're gonna count AFRICA as an influence ? Because there are countries that were once Spanish colonies ?
I speak English, German, Russian, Bisayan and Arabic. I can read Latin, Spanish, and Greek... I can get un-lost in Korea, Japanese, and Persian... oh and French

I really think that we in the US are just too focused on other stuff. I am a Mexican myself, and speak both English and Spanish, but the truth is that Us doesn't really care what goes on in the exterior languages, cause in most places the people are forced to speak English..so..that makes us level with the rest of the world.
Besides if everyone talked Spanish then how would I talk to my friend behind the teacher, haha, jk

Why would Spain force the US to speak Spanish, what authority does Spain have over the US, and before you try to use the US-Iraq comparison I am against that as well;
And please enlighten me how Spanish is the most important language in the world; you're getting ahead of yourself; and I agree with one of the above posters; if we were in need to learn another language it would be Japanese or Chinese not Spanish
