If your 1964 Ghia has not been modified to fit the larger flywheel on the 1600 motor, it will not fit. What needs to be done is the transaxel housing needs to be 'hogged out' to fit the flywheel. Unless of course you want to fit the smaller flywheel from your old motor to the newer model 1600 engine. If it was my project,I would hog out the transaxel to fit the larger flywheel. And remember your 64 ghia is a 6 volt system. Has your car been converted to 12 volt? If not this is a good time to spend the extra bucks and do just that. By hogging out the transaxel(bell housing), means to shave down the two lower thru put bolt holes that the lower engine mounting bolts go through on the trans. A rotary file is a good tool to use. If you have access to air, an air drill is an ideal choice to use the rotary file with, otherwise use an electric drill. (not a battery one). Not too much material needs to be removed, just enough to clear the flywheel in the bell housing. I hope this helps, and not too overwhelming....Good Luck!.....................
P.S..........If you say your old engine is a 1500, and not the stock motor the car came with new, then it should be ready to bolt the 1600 right in. But the 64 ghia came with a 40hp 6 volt engine new.
