Depending on the spending limit consider the following:
1. A Barbie Book
2. An inexpensive Barbie - I pd $4.99 for a ballerina Barbie today
3. Combo Barbie & Book

While some parents are against Barbie, I think she's fine. She was my favorite toy when I was a kid. My kids love her already and they are just 2 & 3 years old.

Non-Barbie Ideas:
1. The book "Alice the Fairy" by David Shannon
2. Anything "Angelina Ballerina" - books, stuffed animals, etc
3. Anything "Dora" - the Dora books are pretty enjoyable and there are some neat little figurines, etc that are available.

At 5 years old I would think she is a good helper around the house. Especially in the kitchen. How about an Easy Bake Oven with different accessories so she can cook her own food? Almost all girls love to play dress up at any age. Some clothes, shoes, or make up (if parents approve). 5 year olds are still interested in dolls, but make sure you get one that interacts a lot. There are so many to choose from that talk, walk, crawl, etc. How about a leap frog game system? I have even seen 5 year olds with nintendo DS. What about a new swim suit and a sprinkler for the backyard. Or a blow up pool A gift certificate to a museum, amusement/water park, zoo, or place she really likes to go. Go with her to a pottery making shop and make your own pottery for the day. Treat her with ice cream for dessert. Go to build a bear and let her make her own bear.

NOT a Barbie; those things are bad role models for little 5 year olds. Get her another kind of doll, like a baby doll or an American Girl doll or something like that. A book would be too boring a present for a 5 year old...hope this helps!

As she is someone you dont really know what her interests is, I would give her either the doll or book. If you do decide on a book get her a Bratz, Princess or any of the animated books eg Monsters Inc, Brother Bear etc

How about a personalized book? Kids really love to hear their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of cute titles like Ballerina Princess, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes and so many more. Check it out...these books make very unique and special gifts. More of a keepsake... Good Luck!

A book!

Barbies create a bad body image - - and there are plenty of parents out there these days that dont want their little girls playing with barbies. I wouldnt take the chance. I know my daughter wont be allowed any barbies in our house when she's 5.

Maybe you can do both. Like find a(coloring) book about barbie. 5yrs don't really develope a passion for books until they are a bit older. If you can maybe even gets a barbie doll to go with it.

Good luck. :-)

u know that there are barbie books out there, my daughter loves them. she loves barbie and she loves to read so get the best of both worlds in one present! and i personally don't think that barbie creates a bad body image seeing that most children don't compare themselves with little plastic dolls that're fun to dress up, generally they compare themselves with peers ( or at least real live ppl) at least me and my friends always did.

My daughter is 5 and really into the "I Spy" game when we are in the car so we bought her an I Spy book which she loves!! As she gets older she will be able to read what to find for herself without us having to read one object at a time so it will grow with her.
