Technically, dogs don't have periods. They go into heat or season about every six months.
The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks. The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen. Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred. While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies

Female dogs can bleed like humans do when we have periods, but this bleeding is called a "heat" and it is there to signify that an unspayed female is ready to mate. A heat usually lasts about 10-14 days as far as I know, and starts with reddish discharge that may lighten to a tan color near the end of her heat.

No female dogs dont have a regular period what they do have is when they bleed usually means they are on heat (meaning they want to mate). If you want to stop the male dogs coming after her and her spot bleeding then get her desexed !

They have a heat cycle every 6 months. In bigger dogs it takes longer for there first heat cycle. You can avoid this by getting her spayed!!

I certainly hope that a qualified individual can answer this.I've
never devoted a lot of thought to the subject,but your question
has aroused some curiosity on my part.
I know that the "mother ship"DOES hover nearby for them from time to time.HEAT
Not to sound flippant,but I've never noticed them getting cranky,
mean,miserable,& bloated during this "glorious" time for them.

yes, unfortunatley they do, they usually get it from around 6 to 12 mo old.
