This is a touchy and difficult situation. My husband has a cousin who is this way and when he and his wife come to visit they never know when to go home, this is why I hate to see them come over. Usually they come over when I have to get up early and go to work because I am not lucky like my husband who has weekends off. Anyway, I hate to be mean or rude to people too, but I will usually start dropping hints around 10 or 10:30 and if that doesn't work atleast by 11 I just say, sorry guys but I have to get up early and I am going to bed, see you later. My husband then entertains them until they go home. Hope this atleast gives you some helpful ideas. LOL

Depends if they came for a long or short visit.

If your guests arrived for dinner, or lunch, and have just been sitting around drinking coffee for hours, they probably don't realize you have things to do and want them to leave. Try clearing the table and wrapping up conversation, or saying things that imply you're very busy. If you can arrange for a friend to call and disrupt, you can say it's a very important phone call and you're very sorry, but you can't attend to them anymore. If you are married, with children, one can 'have a crisis' at an opportune moment. The best thing to do is just hint that it's getting late.

However, if you have company staying over at your house, you can drop small hints that you have a busy life that you're neglecting, or that they're becomnig a slight nuisance. Or, you can always do what they did in colonial times when a guest was overstaying his welcome: leave a pineapple in his room. Good luck!

Martha Washington (wife of President George Washington) had a wonderful way of dismissing guests that I am dying to try on a particular group of people that we are "obligated" to have over in the near future.

At the end of a meal or evening Martha would rise and announce, "the General retires promptly at 9 (pm) and I precede him, good evening." I love her!

Go to your room, put on your PJ's ...lol In the old south, they had a custom, when they cleared off the dining room table, the hostess would place a pineapple in the center piece I heard, that meant you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here!

Look at your watch, start stretching and yawning and say " Goodness look at the time, bedtime already"! If that doesn't get company to leave then just go to bed. lol

Just say, "We were planning on having a romp this evening and unless you care to join us..."
