How do I join the merchant marines?

I am getting out of the Navy and would like to join.

It depends on if you want to be just a deckhand, or if you want to be an officer. To be an officer you have to go to one of the five merchant marine academies. I think they are SUNY-Maritime,Maine Maritime, Kings Point, Texas A&M Galveston, Cal Maritime. You will get your licence through their program. That should be enough to get you going. If you wanna be just a AB or part of the engineering guys, you can just "get" your seamans papers. Im not too sure how you do it some Im sure that thats no help. You may want to check out the merchant marine website. Ive been in the Navy for 8 yrs, and I go the A&M Galveston, We have a few guys that are prior service and are persuing their Marine Transportation degree, there is a similar degree program for engineers.
