i have a piece of original artwork from the Magic:The Gathering game and wonder about copyright issues surrounding it. this is a piece from the original 1993 core set. wikipedia states that since 1995 "all artwork commissioned becomes property of Wizards of the Coast once a contract is signed." my piece predates this by two years and i wonder if i could use the design in commercial ventures. i bought the piece in 1994 so if the '95 year is accurate where does that put me? just wondering what my options are as opposed to leaving it hanging on my wall...

Artists copyrights last until 70 years after the artist's death, unless a publishing house has purchased the rights. I think you'll run into trouble if you try to commercially reproduce an image without fully investigating the ownership.
