This is a difficult question - being from N Ireland I know. When it comes down to it, in my opinion, it is not down to religion because those who favour the violent methods of acheiving their goals and to make their point are not people who actually attend a church service / mass etc - they don't practice their faith - they simply use it as a mask to hide behind as an identity. I think in the experience from N Ireland that it is not religion that is the problem we are all Christian at the end of the day (if not even atheist because many people who assossiate themselves with one denomination or another would not even know anything about that faith if asked. Catholics are associated with Republicans and thus the republican paramilitaries, Protestants are assossiated with loyalists and hence loyalist paramilitaries but the truth is that the good christian people of these faiths want nothing to do with these narrow minded biggoted people.) but it is politics that is the problem - Its all down to identity - religion and politics do not mix and it is wrong to do so - God does not condone violence and hate against fellow man - it is not in his name so why should people associate war with religion. If their was no war people would simply use another differantiating factor to identify themselves and fight with others - its identity/politics & desire to have superiority over others - at the end of the day its actually, unfortunately, human nature - and somewhere along the line it will probably boil down to greed and money - power.

YES.
All wars start like this....."my god is better than your god.....BANG"
Ok...that's pretty simple, but fairly accurate if you really break down the issues that got the war started.

UPDATE- Why do people vote "thumbs down" on answers like this? Because I don't agree with your beliefs? Because I dare to say that organized religion is a scam that does more harm than good? Thats what i find hilarious about "those in touch with the Lord". If someone doesnt agree with a believer, that person doesn't simply have a different opinion that should be valued....that person is just plain wrong.
And the non-believers are the sources of evil in the world. Whatever

Nope.

War is *never* fought for any ideological purpose. It's fought for resources, and power. Religion, Patriotism, anything like that is used by the old men in power, who declare the war, in order to convince the young kids to go and kill and/or die for the old men.

Incorrect interpretation of religions lead to conflict. All religions teach compassion and love for humanity.

There would be a lot less and that is for certain, but there will still be a few wars.

Less war, yes, but there would still be wars. They'd just be fought for a different excuse.

Religions don't help much. Knowing and obeying God are the only way to avoid hatred, selfishness and even war.

No.
There would still be wars over politics, race, and other issues.
We are great at finding reasons to kill one another. If we could only find as many reasons to help one another, we may well be better off.
