First off, check with the airline well in advance. Some airliines don't allow pets at all. Southwest is a good example.

Some airports don't allow pets in the public areas other than guide dogs. If you're using one of those airports (departure, destination, or en-route stop), you won't be able to bring your dog even if the airline normally permits it.

The general rule, when pets are allowed, is that it must be in a carrier that will fit under the seat in front of you. If you're flying on one of those tiny turboprop commutor airlines, that may not be possible.

You normally have to provide a health certificate less than 10 days old and rabies vaccination certificate at least 3 months old and less than 1 year old when you check in at the airport. You may need to arrange another health certificate for your return journey if the original one is more than 10 days old when you check in for your return flight. The airline will let you know what the requirements are.

The airlines that do permit pets in the cabin normally limit it to 2 pets per cabin. That's not 2 for you, but 2 total. Make your reservations early and be sure to specify that you will be bringing a pet.

To keep your dog comfortable, make sure that you have water available and line the bottom of the carrier with absorbent material -- disposable diapers are great for this. Have a couple of extras to clean up after any accidents. Toss in a favorite toy so that he has something familiar to comfort him. Let him get familiar with the carrier well in advance of your travel. Some will adopt the carrier as a bed; that's a plus. Also, put him in the carrier for local trips to familiarize him with it. Many pets will quickly associate the carrier with going with you and will eagerly jump in whenever you head to the door.

We flew from California to Indiana with the wife's dog in the cabin.
Go to PETCO (or similar) and buy an AIRLINE APPROVED carrier. Call the airline before hand, and ask for the dimensions of an underseat container.

i hope you are using an animal carrier, i would not want a loose animal in the cabin on take off and landing
