first of all you should go see a doctor or a reputable piercer. what these people are TRYING to say is that most people who pierce themselves end up with horrible nerve damage and nasty infections. YES theres a chance you can get the same infection from a piercer, even if you went to the BEST piercer, there is a chance of infection. its all on you once the needle goes through you. alcohol, peroxide, and neosporin arent what you clean piercings with. those tend to dry the skin around the piercing out, at get rid of good bacteria (that you need for proper healing) what you wanna use is some anti-bacterial/microbal soap, with no scent. (dial, satin, or provon soaps work best for this) also sea salt soaks work are like heaven to fresh and especially infected piercings. you take 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt and mix it with 8oz of boiled water, let the water cool down and pour some in a shot glass. sit on the couch and tip the glass so it covers the piercing, forming a vacuum. let it soak for 10 minutes. then take a q-tip and wipe away all the crust. with the soap put some on a q-tip and put it where the holes are (once you wiped away all the crust) and rotate the piercing. (important: dont rotate piercing until crust is removed) then of course rinse it with warm water, and then pat dry with a clean towel. if that doesn't clear up within a week or 2 then go see a piercer (you should go see one anyways) so they can take a look at it and help you. or just see a doctor....they may need to give you antibiotics.

anything else...email me. navel piercing infections are a ***** to get rid of.

Try using Sea Salt.. not regular table salt, but sea salt. Put a teaspoon of that in warm water and clean both sides of the piercing 2x a day.. also, keep the area free from clothing for about 3 weeks, irritation from clothing can keep it infected. ALSO, remember to move the ring around. Don't just keep it in the one spot. Try those and you should be okay, unless your needle wasn't sterilized and you have an infection on the inside.. then you'll have to have the ring removed. I'd say if it's still red and sore in 14 days.. take it OUT.

Keep it clean with the alcohol or peroxide and put antibiotic cream on it. You can buy it in the drug store in the first aid section. Neosporin is a good one. If the piercing starts to ooze yellow gunk or if the redness turns to streaks running up your belly towards your heart, tell your mom right away, you have an infection and it could be very serious.

Please tell me you put a hoop through it??? If not, that's ok I guess, but hoops are so much easier to take care of...
that said, here's how I took care of mine:
Wash with liquid antibacterial soap (Dial or something similair) two or three times daily. While washing, move the ring around. (Hoops work well for this reason - work it all the way around, if the ball is on top, move it to the bottom, etc.) Rinse thoroughly, moving the ring to rid the inside of the piercing of any excess soap. It stings for a while, but you know the soap is doing its thing.
Please be advised that navel piercings can take up to 6 months to heal completely. If you follow the advise from people here (almost all of it is good), and the infection worsens, please take it out. You can wait for it to heal and try it again, but piercing through scar tissue can be fairly painful.
However you decide to care for your new addition, be diligent about it. Good luck and best wishes.

Well, apparently you don't need reminded that it was an EXTREMELY stupid idea to pierce it yourself, and you almost deserve the infection.

And if you had went to a professional to have it done, you would know that you are NOT supposed to use rubbing alcohol on a piercing.

Or neosporin.

I have my belly button pierced 4 times, and I'm not even going to bother wasting my time explaining the proper care, because you probably won't follow it anyway... judging by your "Shut up, I don't care" attitude. Sheesh.

well ive only had two of my nine peircings done professionally so i know what your saying and what i did with mine was just put neosporin on it a couple times a day and just move it around and it will hurt for a while so just deal with and dont get fed up and take it out cuz if youve had it done youre gonna want it again and its all worth it cuz once it gets healed then it doesnt ever hurt again only if it getts ripped out or some thing like that

So would you do surgery on yourself too?

Please go to the APP website to learn about aftercare. Alcohol is bad for the piercing.

Also, if you plan on piercing yourself again, learn how to spell the word.

You also may want to read about the Darwin Awards, you may end up getting one if you keep piercing yourself.

First I suggest getting some common sense and go to a professional. I'm in awe at this extremely stupid move.

Doing it yourself is extremely unsanitary. My friend tried that and even with the anti-infection ointments she got it was still pretty bad and she had to take it out eventually. I think you should go to your doc and ask them...don't try to play doctor with your health...
