I've searched everywhere and asked so many people and I can't get a straight answer. I don't feel right throwing them out with the regular trash.

Have you tried calling your local waste disposal company for ideas? Mercury is hazardous waste and must be dealt with as such. Where I live (N. California) we have a "hazardous waste roundup" every year where a specialty company comes to town.

I did a Google search on "mercury lamp disposal" and got a lot of hits that lead me to believe that most states have some sort of program. The lamp industry also has a site listed below.
