with 14 ounce gloves it doesn't hurt all that much because of the surface area of the glove, kind of like a bed of nails effect, but the smaller the gloves the more it hurts.

It doesn't hurt as a sharp pain when you're hit on the side of the head really, but it does hurt as a dull pain. When you're hit with a good shoot you sometimes feel something that can be compared to a hot needle effect on the opposite side of where you got punched. However when you're punched on the nose or caught somewhere else there can be a sharp pain, but the adrenaline of sparring usually lessens the pain.
Body shots sometimes hurt and sometimes are the ones that hurt the most. A good body shot to the liver is incomparable, as ones are to the solar plexus that knock the wind out of you. Usually though if body shots don't catch you good the adrenaline also dulls the pain, but those shots can take alot out of you.
And before I started boxing I thought gloves would be very soft, but man when I first put them on I was shocked at how hard they are. They are not exactly like rocks or a fist but man its not at all like getting hit with a pillow.

It hurts alot less than if you were fighting with the gloves that those guys who do MMA use.
It's not really about pain, it's more about being worn out until you get knocked out. This is why you find that there's more brain damage taking place in boxing than MMA.

Yeah man. Plus, the gloves are made of leather so usually boxers get cut A LOT of times.

Yes, it hurts like hell. It is almost as bad as without gloves on. The gloves aren't pillows. Those little things weigh like 3 pounds. They are hard as hell.

Ever seen a guy get knocked out cold? That doesn't tickle and it isn't an indicator of any other enjoyable feeling. The same goes for bruises, black eyes, broken ribs, lacerations, and several other injuries. If you get hit hard enough, it hurts.

according to George Foreman during his fight with Michael Moorer or in every fight for that matter... it hurt to get hit with gloves on... he said that when you go back to the corner you want to cry and quit.
