It DEFINITELY helps me. I have had GERD since I was about four years old (before such drugs were available), and Prilosec has been a godsend! It works by inhibiting the production of acid in your stomach in response to what you've eaten. It is something you have to take each day, but it is well worth it if you have severe reflux disease.

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor. It turns off the proton pumps in your stomach that pump the acid (H+) in. By decreasing the amount of acid in your stomach, your stomach and esophagus are protected from erosion. The stomach and esophagus then have a chance to heal themselves from the damage the acid did.

Prilosec (omeprazol) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It shuts down the molecules in you stomach lining the make acid (the proton pumps), thereby decreasing the acid in your stomach.

There are other drugs the affect acid like, H2 blockers (Zantac and Pepcid for example), but PPIs work at the final common pathway of acid production. Antacids like Maalox or Tums, neutralize acid after it is already produced.
