What you're asking is at the heart of a philosophy called solipsism. Specifically, the question was famously examined as Hutton's Paradox.
Anyway, pick an answer to your question -- any answer -- and I challenge you to prove the answer. And beware of those who would say something like "If it's a dream you must be alive to be dreaming it", because it could be somebody else's dream! There are a number of religious beliefs about all this being a dream being dreamt by God.
You should look into something called "lucid dreaming", attempting to control one's dreams (It also refers to very vivid life-like dreams). It's a real trip! Might give you food for thought on your question. Field research, eh?
Finally, see if you can find a short story by H G Wells called A Dream of Armageddon -- ooh, I just found a downloadable copy at http://www.readprint.com/work-1485/H-G--Wells.
It addresses all this in a most gripping and memorable manner, describing an ongoing lucid dream that takes over a mans "waking" life, making him question which is which. Great story-telling, as you'd expect from Wells. And yes, no spoilers, but Wells does come up with a way to tell which is which -- dreaming and living. You'll never guess what, but I agree with him.

Of course there's a such thing as life because we're in it right now. If there was no life there would be nothing. We're living life right now.

Yes there is such a thing called life. It depends if you wake up or not.

Well if life is all a dream I guess we are all characters in the mind or some supreme being. Even if that were true, you still have your own thoughts and uniqueness and you experience things in life, it’s all worth something to you in the moment. So even if Life were a dream when that Supreme Being wakes up and we all vanish, it was worth the moments we share in our life. It’s kind of funny if it were true, for me it’s NOT, but still makes me giggle. ;)

Life itself is not a dream, but the physical world is a projection (dream) of mind.
Life as it actually is, is whole, perfect, and complete; creative, joyous, beautiful, eternal, in this spacious present.

Many religions and philosophies ask this very question in many forms:
Is god dreaming us and when he awakes will reality end.
Is our reality being dreamed by our dream self sleeping?
"I dreamed I was a butterfly, now I am not so sure if I am a butterfly dreaming I am a man."

life is a combination of amino acids and cell respiration and a series of simultaneous biochemical reactions that power the brain, sending hydrogen ions thru the ETS to power the neurons in ur brain, giving the illusion of free will. so yes, life is real. and yes, ur no different than a robot.

Life is the dream. Without the dream, we would have no purpose and we would go mad.
