You don't want to get caught up in the commercialism of the Craft. The most powerful tools are that which have the most significance to you. Naturally, anything made of organic materials hold the power of the Earth but my altar is actually an old side table with some very sentimental items and tools on it. Just be sure and consecrate or bless everything you use. Here are some great sites to get you started.

First of all, spells are very personal. No one will share good ones and you come off as a stupid newbie when you ask for them. You should write your own
Second, which alter is best? You mean which wood is best for an alter? Mine is a window seat in our house. We don't have enough tables. It's just a statue, a candle and some insense.
Lastly, oils? Are you sure you want to go there? The real thing can get expensive. Most of the oils in Azuregreen.com and Witchmart.com are blends. For smells, cones, sticks and resin are cheaper. Just have something to catch the ash like a little bowl with some sand, salt or fine dirt. Resin goes on a charcoal cake and light up the charcoal cake. Also don't put the cake in a bowl. The heat makes the dish explode.. Salt works best to absorb some heat.
