Ok, random question, is it old fashion to make your boyfriend ask your parents permission (or really your dad's) before y'all get married? What about before he gives you a promise ring?

It is old fashioned. However, my husband did it. Not when he gave me a promise ring, but before he asked me to marry him. He phoned my father and my husband went to my parent's house and talked with my dad and asked for his blessing not permission. My father of course gave it and I know it meant the world to my dad. I am very happy that my husband did it as it showed immense respect for my father - even though he didn't have to do it - I was still happy he did as I could see how much my father respected it.

It might be old fashioned, but I still hear of it happening sometimes. It's more of getting a blessing than permission ... he is going to marry you either way, but he's being considerate enough to give your dad a chance to allow it. I've never heard of it going on for a promise ring, so I'd say that's really old fashioned.

Yes, it is "old fashioned" which just means out of fashion. It doesn't mean it's not a good thing.

Having the family's blessing on your relationship can make things a lot easier and it shows respect to your parents.

The Bible says to honor your mother and father that you might live long in the land. It is the first commandment with a promise of blessing.

My daughter called me from Canada and asked my permission to pursue a relationship.... because they wanted their parents' blessings. They are now happily married and have their first child.... and I love my son-in-law!

Best Wishes,

Sue

Some people like the old fashion style. It also has something to do, with your dad giving you away at your wedding day. It for the same reason a bride wears a white dress, even if she is not a virgin anymore. It depends on the individual, what they prefer. It all part of the game.
Why would he ask your dad if he gives you a promise ring????
He is not asking you to marry him!

confident I did. You dont incredibly would desire to assert something formal or arranged words. Have a conversation with your destiny in rules... make it casual and then ultimately improve your destiny spouse. in the event that they dont grant you the blessing then its as much as you what you opt for to do. it won't shop you from marrying her. How plenty older are you?

No, it isn't considered old fashion and it shows that your BF has manners and was raised to respect other people. But, don't "make" your BF to do, take him aside and gently say, "It would mean a lot to me if you ask my parents for their blessings first"....only if this hasn't occurred to him. Good luck!!!

I think it's very honorable for a guy to ask for her dad's blessing and I plan on asking my GF's dad in the not too distant future!

If I were a dad, I would respect it a great deal.

It is old fashion but it's also really nice and shows your folks that he's a decent guy with good intentions.

i am 31 and i am on my second marriage. for both of my proposals, i did make them go to my parents. i do believe that is the right thing to do. so YES< DEFINITELY!! and its out of respect for your parents, especially if you were raised that way.

as for a promise ring...it would be a nice gesture.

I think these are sweet traditions that people should try and preserve. If you want it...and your parents want it then who cares if it is old fashioned. Old fashioned isnt necessarily bad.
