I have this friend, who is not one of my best friends, but still a very nice guy who I would not want to hurt. Until a few months ago he dated this girl and broke up with her. I'm interested in dating her, but there is a chance they have become a couple again. I'd like to find out whether this is true or not without asking either one of them. How can I do this?

Even if it isn't true and she's free, should a not-very-close friend's ex be off limits?

Well you could ask a mutal friend or someone who knows them.

Now on to the next issue. Even if you get his permission to date this girl he may still have trouble with it. If you really don't want to hurt the guy I'd say leave it alone completely. How good is your friendship? How much do you want to avoid hurting his feelings? These are all things you should really ask yourself before proceeding. Friends stick around much longer usually than girlfriends do. If it's going to cause trouble you may want to find a girl whose unattached. Weigh your options on how much you like this guy as a friend, how much you'd want to avoid hurting him, and how much you really want to date this girl?

I don't expect to get best answer for this, because I know this not what you want to hear, but take it from someone with experience. Find someone else to date. This situation could become very complicated.

Ask him. by doing that, he can then tell you if he still wants to be with her or other stuff like that, and if he still wants her then shes off limits. Itll be easier than going to her and asking her, THEN going to him and asking if its ok...when you can get everything you wanna know in one conversation.

Try asking one of their other friends if they are back together. If they're not, go for it!
