Actually despite the claims by manufacturers, over the counter mouthwashes do not do anything in terms of fighting plaque. The first line of battle against plaque is of course brushing and flossing. But if anyone likes to use a mouthwash to freshen their breath in my practice I recommend the use of alcohol-free mouth washes like Crest health pro or Breath Rx by Discus Dental or Tom's of Maine mouth wash. There are studies that shows alcohol containing mouthwashes after a long use wash away and damage the tooth colored fillings and bondings and make the porcelain dull. They also dry the mouth.

Listerine is a really nice one.

I can't stand the flavor, but I put some listerine into the bottle cap, dip my brush into it and manually brush my teeth with it. It gives the same results, without the gagging flavor!

By far, it is Listerine.
Its the most powerful mouthwash that I've ever tried. Makes my eyes watery too! lol
