so the farmer, or in my case, my dogs can find the poor thing.. it is also good to warn cars (if the windows are down) if they are on the moooove, or my neighbors... if she is in their yard again, lol.
Deer and other critters can bend or break the fences, so they escape every now and then.. sometimes the batteries get bumped or quit, yadda yadda and they can get out.-
plus, it is just kind of pleasant, the way some people like buoy bells. AND they really ring like mad if something is in the field bothering them (stray dog, coyote nearby) and it warns the dogs that they are agitated... aside from the lowing...
not a joke, but it is the real reason.... god i must be bored-lol!

If thr cows don't return to the barn for milking, the farmer has to go find them. Usually only one or two will wear the bell.

Rocky: Why do cows wear bells?
Adrian: I don't know.
Rocky: Cuz their horns don't work! Is that killin' ya?
Adrain: That's awful!
Rocky: I used to crack everyone up with that in the third grade with that one.

I would have to say so that their owners can hear which direction they are in when they can't see them and to be able to find them easier. It just helps them to know where they are and to locate them easier this way.
