There is no specific antidote for this poisoning. And the half life of the toxin is 17.5 hours in dogs. Induce vomiting in the first 1-2 hours. Administering activated charcoal may inhibit absorption of the toxin. An anticonvulsant might be indicated if neurological signs are present and needs to be controlled. Oxygen therapy, intravenous medications, and fluids might be needed to protect the heart.

Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.

On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

Xanthines affect the nervous system, cardiovascular system and peripheral nerves. It has a diuretic effect as well. Clinical signs:

Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhea

If you are unable to get the dog to a vet, you'll just have to stay with the dog and watch it over the next 48 hours. If it's consumed enough chocolate to make it ill, symptoms will start showing up quickly. Vomitting and extreme diarrhea are two obvious signs, but the dog may also have tremors or seizures (depending on the toxicity level.)

Making the dog vomit can do more damage than good if you don't know what you're doing.

Even if the dog doesn't react badly to this current intake of chocolate, you have to make sure that it doesn't get into the candy again. The substance in chocolate that can kill your dog doesn't pass through its digestive system; it stays with the dog. Further chocolate intake can build up in the dog's body until it reaches a toxic level. What level can kill your dog varies by dog (its age and size), how much cacao was in the chocolate (baking chocolate is more deadly than milk chocolate), and the dog's own individual tollerance levels.

You should just stay calm and try to call a vet that is at a town next to you...if u cant find one just wait and see what happens to your dog...if he starts to get sick and start to have diahera and throwing up then i should take him asap to a vet without an appointment because he is an emergence...hope this helps and good luck...

isn't hershey candy a sugary sweet.. im not american. if a dog eats anything poisonous, give them charcoal tablets - the charcoal absorbes the poison - you give more tablets to a big dog. your dog will most likely just puke later.. i doubt the istuation is life threatening. once my dog ate a whole tray of chocolates.. and all that happened to her was she was happy for the rest of the day

Obviously cholocate is not good for dogs, but my dog ate half a bag of nestle tollhouse cholocate chips once, and she was fine, your dog will prolly be fine, she might get sick and have desintary or throw up alot over the next few days. But as one of the other people answered, keep her in site.

Since there's no vet around, if you can get it to vomit, do it. If not, make sure the dog stays well hydrated because the chocolate will cause serious diarrhea. Sorry it happened, but good luck.

I would look for an emergency vet, sometimes they are around. You could also try a breeders number they might have some suggestion. Definetly keep a close on her/him tonight!
