Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is part of the central nervous system and is involved in controlling body temperature, sexuality, mood, sleep, apetite and vomitting. Low levels of serotonin have been known to contribute to various anxiety, mood and depressive disorders.
The pills which you speak of are called SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) work by blocking the natural recycling process of serotonin in your brain, keeping it present longer, instead of returning to it's storage bins for later use.
Some of the immediate side effects are nausea, changes in appetite, loss of labido, changes of sleep patters and weight gain. All of the side effects usually go away within the first two weeks except the loss of labido and weight gain. Antidepressants usually take up to 4 weeks to reach full efficacy.
Depending on your diagnosis, SSRI's can do great things in lifting people out of some pretty serious depression. But in some cases, medication alone doesn't solve the problem and psychotherapy is needed as part of an adjunct treatment to help the person develop coping skills managing a healthier lifestyle.
Serotonin isn't necesarrily the only neurotransmitter involved in treating depression. There are other antidepressants available that work on modulating different neurotransmitters and are prescribed for different types of anxiety, depression and mood disorders.
Hope you feel better soon

Yes this is a very common side effect of the SSRI's, especially the more sedating ones. Depression can cause one to oversleep but this is not caused by an excess of serotonin. Serotonin is a calming nuerotransmitter and when you increase its levels it causes drowsiness.

Actually, only SSRI's (Prozac, Zoloft, others) affect serotonin. SSRI block the re-uptake of serotonin between nerves (meaning stops the nerve that released it from taking it back). The actual increase in serotonin is minimal, and agitation and difficulty sleep are relatively common early side-effects of SSRIs.

Melatonin makes you sleep. It is my understanding that serotonin does not. It is a neuro-transmitter that increases the feelings of euphoria and well being. If you sleep after meals, it may be due to the types of food that you consume. Carbs can do that...as well as turkey. I do know that some physicians give medications that will counteract what you are feeling....I have students who are hyper-active and medications that would make me jittery...actually calm them down. The best thing to do is to take this discussion to your doctor. Ask him what he is thinking and why he is giving you a specific medication. Good luck with your situation.

The two aren't related at all. Oversleeping doesn't cause depression, it is just a symptom. Antidepressants and depression both cause you do oversleep, but that doesnt mean that that is related.
I dont think that oversleeping from depression sends seratonin to your brain.
