I find him one of the most fascinating people in the Gospels. Far more lines given to "explaining" him and his relationship to Jesus than, say, stepfather Joseph. But he's treated delicately. Never put down. What do you scholar types think? Possibly a rival, or maybe a mentor, of Jesus before His ministry began?

Today, we remember him as a great saint, a cousin of Jesus, and the one who foretold the coming of the Christ. He used the language of the Prophet Isaiah, telling us to make straight the path for the coming of the Lord. He baptized Jesus. This was a different baptism than Christians know. John baptized for the repentance of our sins. Christians are baptized in the name of the Trinity and receive, like Jesus, the presence of the Holy Spirit.

In Jesus' day, however, John was seen as a prophet...and many of his followers did not accept Jesus. These continued to see him as a great Jewish prophet, but they did not become Christians. Others of his followers became followers of Christ. The Gospel of John is especially interesting in its discussion of John, with its emphasis on John as a forerunner to Christ and not a competitor.

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus....He came to tell others about Jesus and how Jesus was coming right after him- many thought John the Baptist was the Christ, when John would tell them, no it is He who comes after me who is greater....God ordained John the Baptist to pave the way for Jesus, so that everyone would see that He truly was a prophet, and speaking from God.

He was a prophet. A godly man, and the cousin of Jesus. No rivalry as they held great respect for one another.
