A Baby Boomer is a person born in 1946 through about 1963. The name came from the fact that during WWII the birth rate in the US dropped dramatically when the boys were overseas. A few months after the soldiers returned the birth rate started to climb dramatically. The rate stayed high throughout the late 1940's and through the 1950's and only started to decline in the early 1960's. So, folks born during this period are called Baby Boomers or Boomers for short.

Boomers comprise the largest single identifiable group in the US - about 78 million people or more than 25% of the population.
Their retirement over the next 20 years will have a huge impact on many parts of the US economy.

People born between (and including) 1946 and 1964. After American soldiers returned home from World War II in1946, the United States experienced an explosion of births (hence the name baby boom) that continued for the next 18 years, when the birth rate began to drop. In 1964, baby boomers represented 40% of the population, which means that more than one third of the population was under 19 years of age. In the 1990s, approximately 76 million people in the United States were born in the baby boom years, representing approximately 29% of the country's population. Since baby boomers make up such a sizable portion of the consuming public, their spending habits and lifestyles have a powerful influence on the economy.

A Baby Boomer is someone who was born during the period of increased birth rates when economic prosperity rose in many countries following World War II. In the United States, the term is iconic and more properly capitalized as Baby Boomers and commonly applied to people with birth years after World War II (WW II) and before the Vietnam War, thus possibly comprising more than one generation.

The Baby Boom is the iconic term widely used to refer to the American population and culture in particular, as post WW II demographics across the world did not mirror the sustained growth in American families over the same interval.

ERica 2368

has submitted an excellent answer, which leaves little room for improvement.

Only to add that, as a subset of a population group, "baby boomers" because of their large numbers and the simultaneous acceleration of history spurred by unprecedented advances in technology, and rapid advances in standards of living, I.E. affluence, are the most examined, researched, writen about, studied,re- researched, maligned, adored, reviled, envied, despised and heralded in the history of civilization.

They are also the first generation to exhibit wholesale rejection of the values and standards of society that their parents upheld.

Viet Nam, civil rights movement, rock and folk music, recreational drugs, sexual liberation, and alternative life styles of every description and persuasion have been hallmarks of the "Baby Boomers" effect on society and the modern culture we inhabit today.

In short, baby boomers are the first demographic group in history to have such trend setting influence and as much attention paid to that influence across the broad spectrum of culture and society as a whole.

They are the generation of American's that were born after World War II and before 1963 (or 62, depends on where you look).

They are also the generation that will bankrupt social security and probably your parents.

People born around the time and after the time of WWII. There was a huge boom in births in the USA during and after WWII that died off in the late 50's.
