The best way to get a kitten to stop doing anything is to squirt them with a water bottle. It works for scratching the furniture and jumping on the table etc. Once they get a bit bigger they may realize that water doesn't hurt them but for a kitten who is minding his/her own business climbing away it startles them and then they associate the tree with being scared and wet.

Okay, this sounds barbaric, but I promise it doesn't hurt the fun furballs... Buy 6 or so mousetraps - just the basic wooden ones. Set them - without bait - around the tree. Cover the area under the tree with single sheets of newspapers. When the cats step on the newspapers around the mousetraps, they will go off, making a lot of noise as they rattle against the papers. Scares them, but doesn't hurt them. This also works on the kitchen counters or table.

I used to spray mine lightly with lemon juice and water before putting the lights on. Cats do not like the taste/smell of citrus. Mine still played with the ornaments the could reach from the floor, but none of them ever climbed my tree. At one time I had 3 cats, I still have two of those three...no problems ever.

A mega-blaster water gun that shoots twenty feet across the room and can zap a cat with dead-eye accuracy every time it even looks at the tree. Decades of experience and cat knowledge and deep affection for the furrbuckets with whom I live.

Try spraying vinegar on the branches. Cats don't like that smell. If it's a live tree, dilute the vinegar with water so you don't turn the branches yellow.

they sell spray things that always work, humans dont really notice it much, but the cats dont really like the scent so they often try to go around the tree.... if that doesnt work, or you have kids and you dont want to take the chance with spary, try building like a little fence with the kids as a projec or something

after three years of fighting this yearly activity that the cats thoroughly enjoy and countless remedies designed to stop this behavior, i have thrown in the towel, gave up, they won. and as i hang my head in beaten shame, the tree will not go up this year.
