I found my Christmas present in his room when I was snooping. How can I tell him that I don't really want a mug?

Aww that's sad. Regardless of what he got, you should act like you totally and completely love it. He got it for you and it's from his heart. That's the greatest gift of all.

First off why were you snooping on your 9 yr old? Second, does your son have a study job? Can he run right out and buy you something else? Is there a reason you want to break your son's heart? Be a loving, caring parent; plaster a smile on your face, say how much you love getting a present from your son ( he didn't have to get you that mug you don't like, it means he cares if he thought of you at all), and then only use it every once in a while when he is around to see you, so he knows he is special to you too.

Please tell me your kidding? I am beginning to wonder who is more mature here. Do you realize that a child goes through thought processes just like us probably even more so to try and pick out a present that will mean something to the person that they love. By his thinking he may believe very dearly that you NEED that mug. Even if that's not the case, your son thought very much of you to not only pick out this present for you, but has already purchased it. I haven't even began my shopping yet. Another thing, what kind of allowance does he get? Maybe he bought what he thought you would like with what he could afford. I truly believe that you need to remember what the present reflects not so much as what it is. It reflects love and the caring that went on in getting that present for you. I suggest that you reflect on the heart of a child that you would crush if you even mentioned that you didn't care for it.

My advice is on Christmas morning, when you open that mug, smile and say thanks son! I love it! For this is not a mug, but a gift of love from your son. Then if you are that desperate go and buy your own gift.

First of all, you shouldn't snoop. It may cause your son to not trust you, and at nine he looks up to you. Now about the gift it may not be yours, but if it is can you disappoint him by being ungrateful? You can no sooner hurt his feelings than you would allow someone else to. So come Christmas morning after opening the gift promptly fill it with coffee and announce it was just what you needed and then ask him how he knew. Children at this age put a lot of stock in their parents. They all carry their hearts on their sleeve for the world to see. Don't break your sons heart the world will see.

Are you serious!!?? If you really feel you need to tell a 9 year old child that you don't want his gift then you never needed to be a parent in the first place!! What the h*ll is wrong with you!? He is a child!! What 9 year old goes to the mall and brings you back an amazing Christmas gift that you have always wanted. He is prob so excited to give it to you and here you are so pathetic that you actually are on here asking how to tell him you don't want it. I pray for your sons sake that you act like it's the best damn gift you ever recieved! What a selfish and sad human being you are! You don't deserve anything from that child if this is how you feel! I would just absolutely adore whatever my baby gave me, whether it be a scribbled on piece of paper, or a stick with a bow on it. Shame on you!

You don't, he's nine. You tell him thank you. It's the thought that counts. He doesn't have a steady income so unless you are going to give him the money for the gift you want and take him there, you should be grateful for anything he gets you. You should also drink from the mug at least once a week.

Um yeah. If my nine year old child gave me a ripped up piece of paper, I would still like it. My suggestion is you don't mention a word about not liking it. You PRETEND you like it, because Christmas isn't about getting the best of gifts. And anything a child gives you is the best. Last year my little cousin who was seven at the time, drew me a picture for Christmas, because she didn't have money to buy me anything. She felt horrible. Yet, I still told her how much I loved what she did give me. Presents come from the heart. If it's something you wouldn't buy on a regular basis, it still shouldn't just "flat out suck" in your opinion.

More than liking or not your son´s Christmas present, more important is the relation (father-son) between you two.

So the rational thing you should do is pretend you like it and what is more, use it for a long time with relish, it will be convenient for a good relation.

Telling your son you do not like it, has no valid objective, and will get you nowhere.

In life thing should be done according to priorities, and in your case a good relation with your son has priority over telling him you don´t like the mug. So as an adult act according to priorities.

You don't. He's only 9 yrs old. You'll hurt him deeply. He probably thinks it's the coolest thing in the worl. You act like you think so too. Did your parents ever tell you your presents sucked? Cristmas isn't about what you want, thant teaching your child the wrong values (selfishness). It's about being with and thinking about the ones you love and who love you. So when you open up your mug, act like you are surprised( pretend you didn't peek) and just say thank you!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Who is the adult here and who is the child. You were SNOOPING for your present!!!! And have the balls to say you don't like a gift your child took the time to get for you!!! If you don't want to use the mug to drink out of, put it on your desk or by the computer to serve as your special pen/pencil holder. You don't deserve such a thoughtful kid.
