I've been searching for another dog. We already have an awesome great dane, but I think it would be cool if he had a friend. Just wondering if anyone has a good answer.

One of my friends' family has a great dane named morgan, who has taught herself how to open the car doors and hop in at will. We know each other from showing horses, and Morgy loves being around them. They also own a daschund named Doodle, and Morgy and Doodle are best friends. They seem like a very incompatible pair, but they are so cute together. My jack russell, Nutmeg, also loves Morgan and cannot wait until the fair when she can run around with Morgan throughout the week. I think a little dog would be great, as well as even out the size!

A client at my job just asked the same question today. Anywho, if you don't want another great dane, I would suggest a lab of sorts. We do "doggie day care" and when the great dane comes in, the only dogs that can handle the play are the labs. They're strong and have very high tolerance. So, have fun with all your puppies!!!

I feel especially qualified to answer this question. Being the proud owner (or property) of 3 Great Danes, I can honestly say that the best companion for a Great Dane is a person!

But, as for another canine companion, it depends on your guy's temperament. I have one that would get along with anything if he wasn't around his mom and dad. His mom loved cats so much that she adopted and raised a litter of them for a year. Then she killed them one by one. The dad gets along great with the other two of them, but doesn't care for people. For that reason, I keep him away from other dogs because they are usually accompanied by their owners. There are a couple of stray mutts that come around when Lady is in heat and all three of my Danes tolerate their presence quite well (to my dismay).

If I were going to add another to the family, I would make sure it was not of sufficient size to breed with Lady since she is an intact female. Your male would have a great time with a female Dane. Just make sure one of them or the other is 'fixed' unless you want to have to work your butt off. (I don't recommend it. I bred one litter and had my male neutered as soon as I knew Lady was bred. It's a 24 hr a day job for about four weeks after whelping a litter of Danes. Then it goes to a 12 hr day for the next three to four months or until you place them. I'm having the other male neutered next month.)

In retrospect, I have had a Great Dane male and a Saint Bernard female that got along great.

I wouldn't recommend a Boston terrier because Danes can be very predatory with small animals that move fast. They love the chase. Remember, they were bred to take down wild boars. Mine have killed possums, squirrels, a racoon and some skunks, in addition to the barn cats we used to have. But, like I said, it depends on your guy's temperament.

A well mannered Great Dane gets along with virtually any size/type of dog and cats.

I have friends that have Great Danes & Chihuahuas. Myself I have 2 Great Danes, a Beagle, A German Shorthaired Pointer, 2 Labs and 6 Persian cats.

Great Companion Dogs

Another Great Dane would be good.
I obviously wouldn't get a small/medium sized dog as they could feel very intimidated by a very large dog like the Great Dane.
Some other large sized dogs (weigh over 100lb) you might want to consider are:

Rottweiler, Borzoi
Akita Inu, Saint Bernard
Great Pyrenees, Neapolitan Mastiff
German Shepherd, Boerboel
Alaskan Malamute, Doberman
Golden Retriever, Boxer
Weimaraner, Greyhound

Remember, before you go ahead and buy ANY breed of dog, you need to research the breed thoroughly. Although it may be a bit boring and very time consuming, it would be the best for you and your new dog/puppy.
Goodluck :)

i have a great dane and i got a new puppy about 7 months ago that is a mutt. when my puppy was like 3lbs my great dane would lay on the floor and roll over and let the puppy crawl all over him and chew on his face. they are now best buddies. i would suggest taking your dane to the pound and picking out a dog that your dane gets along with.

Great Danes are the best dogs to have. They get along with everything from another large dog to a chiwawa.
