in a side to side line as wide as your camera can tolerate, 2 or three people deep depending on the size of the group, all tightly together, hope they like each other

The best advice for groups is to take several pictures. Then you can replace the heads of the people with their eyes closed, tongues hanging, drooling with versions where this isn't happening.

For a large group with little camera to subject distance you will need a wide angle lens.
