Thomas the tank train set. There are also a series of books and tapes that can be read and played to him. Children are sponges, you never know how much they can and will absorb. My son can read. He is on the honour roll at his high school. Yet, when he was only 3 and a half I was told by his teacher that he would never read. Don't give up on him, expose him to every thing. Dr. Montessori wrote several books on teaching autistic children. Read it, make the toys with in it. Watch your child's mind grow.

i have two mildly autistic boys in my pre k classroom. they are both in love with cars. the little hot wheels cars are the absolute favorite. they both love the movie CARS as well.

the other thing that they are both obsessed with: Thomas. None of the other boys are really interested in Thomas except them. The love Thomas books, Thomas clothing, Thomas movies, Thomas toys. I even had to paint a Thomas train on their pumpkins during our harvest party!

how about puzzles? lacing cards? or sorting bears?

play dough and cookie cutters? a sand and water table from Fisher Price or Little Tykes?

Legos? Lincoln Logs? Magnetix?

Musical instruments? Markers? Marble whirl?

Good luck finding the perfect gift! SD

I might consider getting something related to what he is interested in. Does he like trains, cars, dinosaurs, etc.? Good gifts for preschools include puzzles and books, so you could try to find one of these items related to a topic he likes. There are also a lot of building sets (like Lego) that come in a variety of themes. I'm a teacher, so I always like to recommend educational gifts. :)

Also, here are some other autism resources, if you are wanting to learn more. Happy Holidays!

Autistic children learn in chunks .. their actions can become very repetitive .. how about an educational dvd that can be played over and over so that he learns .. music is another good choice .. jigsaw puzzles are also another challenge for them .. or touchy feeling books .. they love the sensation of feeling .. hope this helps ..
