Hello,
Why? because epilepsy doesnt respect age, wealth or health, YES! you can suddenly get epilepsy. Although, my guess is that someone who suddenly get's a seizure out of the blue probably has some kind of underlying imbalance that lead up to it. There are thought to be a number of possible causes for epliepsy, a) a genetic element within the family (so does anyone else in your family have the condition too?) b) hormonal or chemical changes in the body c) some kind of trauma ie. car crash, etc.
**Epliepsy has a genetic element within my family but it seems only on the female side.
**Both my Mum & my sister are epilepstic (my mum for over 30years now and is well controlled with strong medication and my sister petti mal fits i.e. minor epilepsy no drugs required).
**Please realise that if your condition is well controlled by your drugs and you can live a more or less normal life, be grateful, be VERY VERY grateful. Seeing someone else having a major seizure isnt much fun even if you've seen it many times, no! NOT nice I'm affraid.
**Think what you would be like without any medication?

Epilepsy is casued by a chemical imbalance in the brain which leads to shortages or malfunctions in the signals sent from one part of the brain to another - it can be brought on by drug use (any type - even alcohol is known to bring on fits in some people) , head injury, high temperarture through illness ( i mean really high -like where you are sweating and hallucinating), infection, or changes in the body - like many people develop it in teenage years cos of the changes involved in puberty. Flashing lights can sometimes start it off. Sometimes it just happens unfortunatley. Sometimes you can 'grow' out of it or controlled medication subdues it so the seizures wear off - although theoretically cured you would still be more prone to a seizure than someone who has never had one and your brain pattern maybe slightly different. SOmetimes people juts have one seizure ever - and never again. Othertimes it is a lot harder to control - if you have it, I hope you get it under control soon.

I don't know if I am wrong to assume that you've just been diagnosed, but if so then please don't think that your life is over because of epilepsy. I have had fits this year and have undergone lots of horrid tests and scans etc, only to find out that I don't have epilepsy. I think this is worse than having the condition, because I still have problems but don't have a reason and/or medication to control the symptoms. I was at Uni and had to leave my course and it broke my heart quite simply. No-one knows even now what the problem was/is and I don't suppose they ever will, but I have to get on with it, live my life and hope that I don't pee on someone's handbag if I have a funny turn!

EPILEPSY IS AN IRREGULAR DISCHARGING OF ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY IN THE BRAIN, USUALLY FROM A SINGLE FOCUS.
THE CAUSES CAN BE NUMEROUS, INCLUDING PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE BRAIN (EPILEPSY IS COMMON IN PEOPLE FOLLOWING STROKE FOR THIS REASON), CHECMICAL (CHANGES IN THE ELECTROLYTES OF THE BODY WILL CHANGE THE ELECTRIC CHARGE ACROSS THE NERVE CELLS AND MAKE UNEXPECTED ELECTRICAL DISCHARGES MORE LIKELY), OR FUNCTIONAL (FOUR GENES IDENTIFIED AS BEING RELATED TO EPILEPSY CODE FOR ION CHANNELS ACROSS THE NERVE CELL MEMBRANES THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTROLLING THE BALANCE OF CHEMICALS THAT CREATE THE ELECTRIC CHARGE OF THE NERVE).
IN SHORT, THE GENETIC ONE IS UNLIKELY AS YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN PRODUCING THE MALFUNCTIONING ION CHANNELS SINCE BIRTH AND WOULD USUALLY HAVE HAD FITS ALL YOUR LIFE.
THAT LEAVES A TRANSIENT CHEMICAL IMBALANCE, THE CAUSES OF WHICH ARE TOO NUMEROUS TO DISCUSS FURTHER, OR A PHYSICAL CHANGE INSIDE THE BRAIN, WHICH WOULD INCLUDE, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU'VE SUSTAINED A HEAD INJURY RECENTLY, HAVE BEEN USING DRUGS (LEGAL OR ILLEGAL), OR HAVE AN UNDERLYING PATHOLOGY (EG BLEED, TUMOUR ETC).
IT IS ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE SEIZURES DEPENDING UPON THEIR HORMONES AND PEOPLE CAN GO THROUGH A PHASE OF SEIZURES DURING PUBERTY, THEN SETTLE AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS THEREAFTER.
HOPE THIS GIVES YOU SOME IDEAS AND A DIRECTION IN WHICH TO GO.

Epilepsy can be caused by a number of things, especially an injury to the head, and excessive alcohol intake.
