The criteria for my project is this:
I need to build something that uses two simple machines to lift 500 grams of sand (in a soup can) 5 centimeters in the air. The only power it can use is another can that can be filled up to 200 grams (gradually) with sand. The project is due a week from this Monday. I can use any materials except for ready made things .. obviously. PLEASEEE help. Thank you so much.

And lever + folcrum counts as one.

the lever/fulcrum combo gives you mechanical advantage. add also a pair of pulleys, so that the lever yanks a string, and the string goes through pulleys to lift the lb of sand. you mount one pulley to the table, and the other one to the ceiling. that way, as the lever goes up, pulling one end of the string up, the other end of the string is lifting the 1lb of sand.
you can also connect your lever to turn a gear, which winds the string, which goes through a pulley, and lifts the sand...

Do you have to use two machines? One should do -- a simple lever counts as a machine, and that will lift your sand 5 cm in the air. Just be sure the fulcrum is close to the soup can. If you want to be dramatic, you can use your second machine (another lever) to tip the sand into the soup can. You could use a melting ice cube as your starting device.... sounds like an interesting project.

One of the earliest definitions of machine is a mechanism that does work. You can use a screw, pully or lever.
The lever is the most simple. If you need a mechanical advantage of 500/200 and a height of 5 cm, you need to make the arm holding the 200 grams of sand 5/2 as long. So if your fulcrum or center balance for the lever was 10 cm from the 500 g can, your 200 g can would need to be 25 cm from the fulcrum, and will go down 12.5 cm as it makes the 500 g can go up 5 cm.

fulcrum and lever. place a cylynder shaped object towards the 500 hundred grams of sand.
To lift the sand with the other 200 grams, use momentum. puor a sustainable amount of sand in 4 quicks pours, so that every time the momentum lifts the sand with more power and higher

The one of the two machines you are after is a lever and fulcrum. Using this machine, you can lift your 500 grams with your 200 grams. The short hand of this machine is a see-saw, where the pivot (the fulcrum) is placed towards the heavy object in order to allow the lighter object to lift it.
