In many cases I believe it is, in the true definition of the word "religion"
Religion means "demonstration of faith" and that isnt restricted to only God (or gods/goddesses) but what you have faith in.
I have a friend who is more "religious" to his atheism than I am to my Christianity. He reads just about every book he can get his hands on that denies or tries to disprove God, he quotes words of other Atheists all the time, other than me, he associates only with like minded Atheists, spends more of his time trying to convince me there is no God than I do trying to convince him there is One. Atheists like this, I do believe it is their religion.

Atheism is the state of disbelief or non-belief in the existence of a deity or deities. This puts it in the category of "belief system" rather than "organised religion".
(As a matter of note - Some religious and spiritual beliefs, such as several forms of Buddhism, have been described by outside observers as conforming to the broader, negative definition of atheism due to their lack of any participating deities. However, there are still a good number of Buddhists in the world...)

Yes, I think atheism is indeed a religion. Consider that it takes greater faith to believe in nothing than to believe in something. For example a person could interpret a lightening strike as an act of God. One can argue forever about what caused the lightening and why but it's really tough to argue that nothing caused it. Likewise it's really tough to argue that nothing caused the universe or the world or us. The dilemma of the atheist is that they must employ a massive amount of faith to argue against faith.

The word means "lack of theism".....so obviously it is not a religion. Do some follow atheism in a dogmatic way..perhaps. But it's understandable to be a pissed-off atheist when you have christians and what not trying to shove their harmful ideas down your throat wherever you go. No one likes to be a 2nd class citizen....they will fight back.

we should consider if being moral is necessarily being religious, some athiest want to be considered good, eithical human beings, but not religious ones.
calling it a "fake" belief depends on u!
if u blieve that there is a God, and he created this universe, then u'll think of Atheism, as an untrue belief system!

You ever pass an Atheist church on your way to work? Get stopped by atheist evangelists in the street? Can you identify an atheist sacred text that guides their lives? Some of these questions are too easy.

religion - (n) 1. the service and worship of God or the supernatural.
atheism - (n) 1. withou belief in any god or the supernatural
So, the answer is no.
In any case, I prefer the term polyatheist. There are so many gods not to believe in.
