Well. I have had that problem( or I should say my Ford friends have) and what we all have found is to find a few chug holes to drive over or speed bumps so as to jar the hood latch loose. Once we got the hood opened we greased the hood lock mechanism real good with a white grease and the hood striker with grease also so as to make it work properly. And this was on vehicles of less tha 3-4 yrs old. Didn't make any difference if it was Ford,GM,Dodge or Toyota or Ferrari

like somenoe said have a buddy push down on the hood lightly while you pull the lever and listen for the latch to open
then spray lots of wd-40 in there and wiggle all the parts back and forth so it really gets in there
what probably happened is the lock got stiff, and when you got it open, it stayed open, and then you slammed the hood down and it didn't go back the way it's supposed to.
so while you have the hood open, check out the lock that you didn't bend anything.
then gently lower the hood down, and close it just by pressing down firmly, making sure everything is lined up. don't slam the hood down anymore or do so very carefully... doing it carelessly especially on a big hood, iwll mis-align the locks and you will damage them..

I had a car that when I pulled the hood release lever it broke the cable. It was open enough that I couldn't get it closed and it was closed enough that I couldn't get it open. I had to go under the car with a pair of pliers and grab the cable as close to the hood release latch to open it. Got rid of that damn car too good luck!

Could be one of two things the hood latch assembly may be rusty or seized or the hood release cable itself could be seized.
There is a great product called P.B. Blaster which in my opinion is far superior to WD-40 try to use a little on the latch if that doesn't help the cable may be seized and will need to be replaced.

what does your fluids have to do with the hood? what is wrong is that you need a new spring in the release.

Or just try a little spray oil such as wd40 on the springs where the latch goes - put plenty on it might work.
