I have a gift that I realy and truley want. I don't usualy ask for much but this is something that I feel I want. I will use it a lot and with all the hard work I have put in I feel I truley deserve it. So a person did purchase it for me. Now all I hear from my family and friends is how they have no money for what they want. Now I realy feel bad.

I always appreciate when people tell me what they want as a gift. I hate to feel like I have wasted my money on something that they do not like. If I ask some one what gift they would like, and it is out of my range I always say something like, "O.K., Name something else" and laugh. They usually then understand that I couldn't afford answer #1. If they couldn't afford it, they shouldn't have bought it. It's not your fault.

Personally I don't think etiquette requires you to have returned the 'repeat' gift to begin with. She gets what she gets, and usually people attach a gift receipt in the event of gift duplication. Therefore it would be her responsibility, if she choses, to make an exchange for the money, or for another item. A gift giver should never be expected to return to the store and make an exchange. Their effort has already been put forth, and it's not the givers fault there is a duplicate gift. That being said, if what you can afford is a $20 gift, then that is utterly appropriate. Try to get something along a more personal line (such as if the two of you frequently drink wine together, get a pair of really nice wine goblets from Crate & Barrel. they usually supply a box too) and wrap it up really pretty with a heart felt message in the card. There's no reason to financially strain yourself. Just think about what you would 'expect' if the situation were reversed. Good friends aren't concerned with the price tag. Ever.

This person went out and over extended themselves to get you a gift? Must be some gift. Is not your fault they did this and my advice is to them go out and earn more money and move on. Or did you cajole them into getting this gift and now they are suffering because of this? Is a double edged sword and need more info to be more helpful.

You did not force someone to give you tha gift. It was purchased for you and if the person felt they couldnt have afforded it they shouldnt have purchased it. As hard as it is not to feel guilty DONT!

I don't know if I can explain it properly, but I think there's something wrong with asking for a gift.

A gift should be a surprise, given freely, from the heart.

Personally I like buying my own special gifts, If i know I deserve it. (especailly when I know I've earn it.. ) Sometimes asking for a gift is just too much for people who is on a budget.

I wouldn't feel badly because you didn't make them purchase the gift. They chose to do so for you, and it's rude of them to complain about it.

They shouldn't have boutght it for you if they couldn't afford it. If it was something that expensive you should not have asked for it. Everyone should feel bad in this situation. Talk to them and offer to sell it.
