There are a few tried and true methods for this. I had a major problem with a cat urinating on my futon for months and months, so I have tested every single way to get rid of that awful smell and stain! As usual, there are a few ways that work better than others.

My first choice would be to dilute a cup of white vinegar with a cup of warm water, put it in a spray bottle and spray the affected area until it is saturated. You will have a vinegar smell there in place of cat pee, but the vinegar can be cleaned up more easily.

You can also make a paste with baking soda and warm water and scrub the carpet with that, then wipe clean with a clean cloth.

And the last method to try is one of the enzyme cleaners as previously mentioned. The best ones out there are the ones from the pet store that are targeted specifically at cat urine. Soak the affected area and let it air dry.

I've found the Febreeze pet odor eliminator to be effective after cleaning with vinegar, but not as a stand-alone treatment. Febreeze masks the odor with perfume instead of absorbing it.

There is a product called Spot Shot. This is a spray bottle with a trigger. Get the kind that specifically names pet problems. You soak up the pee, spray with Spot Shot, let stand or follow instructions, then soak that up. This gets rid of odors and stains.

Peeing outside the box is a life-threatening situation for a dumb animal. An uncommitted owner might decide to "put the cat to sleep." There may be an outside cause such as unacceptable litter, litter box scooped too seldom, or a bladder infection or stone. When you soak up the pee, is it pink with blood? Talk to a vet.

Get rid of the cat and replace the furniture or carpet they peed on.

OR...clean it thoroughly then don't let the cat in anymore.

The problem with cat pee is that no matter how you clean it, the cat can still smell it and will pee there again, and again.

My kitty lives outside now and we have cleaned the couch and carpet AT LEAST 4 times, with special stuff and I use Fabreeze and Urine gone ALL THE TIME. I came home last night and could tell that my g-ma had let her in, because it yet again, smells like pee by my front door. DARN IT>

1) blot up urine as much as possible.
2) liberally pour hydrogen peroxide over the urine areas (make sure to spot test the carpet or upholstery first). You need to continue putting the peroxide on until it stops foaming up, then let that dry.
3) pour vinegar on the area, again let it dry
4) after that dries, you can neutralize the vinegar smell by sprinkling baking soda into the areas, let it sit for a while before vacuuming/sweeping it up.
5) Use a deterrent, such as the mixture an above poster mentioned, or orange peels, or a Petco type product like Sour Apple.
Good Luck

First . . . sprinkle Baking Soda down then vacuum up - spray with Fabreeze - THEN - train them to keep off (dog and/or cats) . . . make a Repellent Powder of:
Cayenne pepper 1oz
Powdered mustard 1-1/2 oz
Flour 2-1/2 oz
Place in plastic bag w/seal and shake together several minutes being careful not to inhale the dust or get it into your eyes. Sprinkle where desired.

Outdoor Repellent Spray for structures of wood, concrete, or stone, spray with a concentrated solution of moth flakes (naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene) in mineral spirits . The solvent will evaporate, leaving crystals of the moth repellent in the structure. For a long time these will give off vapors that are distasteful to animals.
