orlando has it right..but to repeat:
Puerto Rico IS NOT an independent country. It is a Territory of the US, like the Virgin Islands, Samoa, Guam, the Marianna's. It is EXACTLY the same as living in Boston or LA...
Puerto Rico, the Virgins et al ARE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA....we have Post Offices, FBI, Welfare; same 50 star 13 stripe flag..... our Army National Guard units serve ...and our soldiers die.....in Iraq and Afghanistan...
US citizens DO NOT need a passport to travel from PR to the mainland any more than you need passport to travel from Chicago to Dallas

That question is frequently asked.
I am Canadian and I need a passport to get in Puerto Rico, but that country has a lot of agreement with the U.S.A.. Basically if you are an American, you are as well a Puerto Ricain.
When Puerto Rico became independent from U.S.A. in 1952, they kept a lot of activities and rights. The money is the same, the mail systems and so on ... including the citizenship. You have the same rights as a Puerto Ricain except about the politic and the laws. That is a democratic and independant country with a lot of cooperation with the U.S.A.
No need visa in January 2007, same as if you travel from L.A. to the Big Apple.

If you a US resident or a US citizen, passports will not be required to enter/leave US territories. That includes, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. All you will have to present is a drivers license or government issued ID. Now, if you are entering these islands from another country, the same Visa requirements are needed to enter the US territories as you woul to enter the states. And please, for the last time, please note that Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, so all Puerto Ricans, or any one born on the island are US Citizens as with all the other US territories. Puerto Rico became a Commonwealth of the United States on July, 25th 1952 under the administration of Luis Muñoz MarÃn.

you do not need a visa to visit puerto rico. if you are puerto
rican and living in puerto rico you know need a passport
to the united states and caribbean islands, such as, santo
domingo. I have lived in puerto rico for 35 years and i
am from chicago, so things are a changing here. p.s.
we now have a 5% sales tax plus another 1.1 coming
along in january 2007. by July or August 2007 the puerto
ricans have to decide if they want to be independent or
a state, its time to make a decision.
