You need to rent a floor sander. This is not a DIY job though but good luck to you if you try. If you stand still for too long the sander will remove several layer of floor making a mess. The sander will also throw up dust all over everything so you need to plastic off the room. When sealing the wood again it can not be walked on for 24 hrs.. So you should plan on a whole week of work to do a good job. Found some good sites for you to look at so you know what you are doing.

go to a rental place, like "united rents" or equivalent and tell them what you want to do. They will rent you a sander and sell you the sandpaper disks or belts and tell you how to use them. Be careful you can lose control or gouge a hole in the floor easy if you are not.

just also be sure you have a real wooden floor. pergo is not real wood and you will ruin it by destroying the surface if you try to sand it.

Try a belt sander, or a circular floor sander. You can usually rent both of them from a tool rental place, look in the yellow pages. Just make sure with the floor sander, that you KEEP MOVING. If you stop it, its going to grind a circle into your floor.

First, knock below the surface any nails, etc. Then, hire a floor sander, wear correct dust mask.... keep the sander moving, do it diagonally. but, retain some of the final sanding dust, mix with PVA adhesive to make a filler the correct colour.

hire it done by a flooring company, i tried refinishing a floor one time, and the belt sander nearly killed me. plus the job looked like a bad dream when i got done., so save yourself alot of sweat, tears and possible bloodshed and hire it done.
