You should really see a psychologist or psychiatrist. I prefer the latter. You are definitely going through a period of depression...a depression that can be helped by the right medication. Hence the psychiatrist (licensed to administer drugs).

My father went through a very very similar experience. Worked in a good postition at a national insurance company with all the benefits, had a wonderful home and family life. Had shoe stores back in the day, and was just basically successful. Now, he is on a little bit of medication and also deemed as disabled. His diagnosis was Bi Polar disorder but may prove to be schizoaffective disorder, the midpoint of schizophrenia and manic depression. Do you ever feel mania? Either way, you should seek professional help and know that your situation is not uncommon.

My best wishes to you. Hang in there.

Man, I can sympathise. It's hard to start over again in your 50's.
Some ideas: you may be over-identified with the person who was a 100K pa printer. He's gone, that's not you now. However, the new you is still a man with a great deal of knowledge, creativity, experience and moxie with which to deal in your new situation. You feel blocked because you're thinking like the old guy. In fact, you are at the centre of innumerable choices and limitless possibility.
You're not getting handyman work because that isn't what you want to do. You have no desire pulling in new work and experience. You know you have much more to offer, much more.
You have a blank page, un carte blanche, upon which you can write the next chapter of your wonderful life. Begin to feel that, "Hey! I am free of my former life! I can do anything I want!"
So. What'll it be? Decide what it is you really want to do and do that thing - even if it means going back to school or expanding your handyman business into a contracting business (100K plus there.) Your world is STILL in your hands and they are capable hands.

You are depressed my friend. It's hard to think clearly when you feel like that. You are not alone... millions (best guess put the figure over 30 million in America alone.) I was one of them for over 30 years. Consider yourself lucky. I get a lot of emails about this topic on my website http://www.attackanxiety.com from people just like you. There is help. The good news is that the fix is much easier then living like you are right now. Good things will flow your way again once you deal with the depression. But you have to deal with it or it will deal with you. Trust me... !

Depression is a mood disorder that causes you to feel sad or hopeless for an extended period of time. More than just a bout of "the blues" or temporary feelings of grief or low energy, depression can have a significant impact on your enjoyment of life, your work, your health, and the people you care about.

Depression affects people differently. Some feel down for extended periods of time; for others the feelings of depression come and go. If you have short episodes of mild depression, you may be able to continue to work and take care of daily activities. However, if you do not seek some form of treatment for your depression, you are at risk for getting more depressed or becoming physically ill. In severe cases, depression can cause people to become incapable of communicating, unable to do routine activities, or suicidal. In these cases, it is essential to seek medical attention.

People with depression may be reluctant to seek help because they feel that it is a sign of personal weakness or a character flaw or that they should be able to "pull out of it" on their own. We now know that depression, like other medical conditions, has a chemical and biological basis. Treatment for depression is safe and usually effective even for severely depressed people.

I hope this helps you and I wish you well on your journey to wellness.

Sucks! I am in a similar situation. For eight years my parents have punched the hell out of me and had me picked up by cops to be medicated by psychiatrists. I am in total shock. All I do is sit and stare at the wall. It messed up my head. These doctors all tried to brainwash me into thinking that I had a disorder. I have to get injections for the rest of my life. My life is over. I'll never make love to a woman again. -Hey man.... only doing will fix this.
So let me warn you.... DON'T GO SEE A PSYCHIATRIST!!!! DON'T START TAKING PILLS! DON'T LET THEM CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU HAVE A DISORDER. http://antipsychiatry.org
Seriously.... DO NOT GO SEE A SHRINK! THEY WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE!
-Try going for reiki or accupuncture. For real!
