I am 17 and want to joing the US Navy. I don't know whether I should enlist before or after college, but I'm leaning towards enlisting now. So do ya'll have any suggestions as to what ratings to look out for? Is it better to enlist straight after high school or do ROTC in college?

You should go and take the ASVAB. It is the Navy's placement exam that everyone has to take. If you score high enough, they will help you enroll into ROTC. It is not a bad thing to do as they will pay for all your college education, while you are serving time in the military. After college you will go and serve active time in the fleet somewhere, hopefully we will not be at war with anyone by the time you graduate.

Good Luck!

Having spent 10 years in the Navy myself, I can tell you that choosing your rating takes some thought. But a good rule of thumb is this: choose something which might benefit you if you ever decide to leave the Armed Forces. Anything in the AEF (Advanced Electronics Fields) or the Nuclear program will pay dividends long after you've left the service. This is an important consideration because what of what often happens to quite a few servicemembers after seperating: a lot of folks will leave the military having been a Boatswain's Mate, or Infantry, or some other general military specialty which has absolutely no civilian equivalent. The probem with that is, in today's job market you're going to need something in your skillset which extends past high school-level training (especially if you're planning on being able to eat and pay rent). If you're not going to get that training from college then you might as well make your military experience pay off for you.

I'd must say the best process within the Navy is CTI (Cryptologic Technical Intel). CTI's are linguists. This cost calls for a passing rating at the DLAB, and Top Secret Security Clearance. Choice of languages comprise Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, French, Iraqi, Pashto, Tagalog, Levantine, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese. You do not get continually get your first option despite the fact that, and have got to commonly decide on from Big five.

I would recommend going ROTC first and going to college, a college education will take you much further in life, even in the Navy. With a 4 year ROTC program under your belt, you can go right in and be commissioned rather than going through boot and all that.

If you'd rather be enlisted, I recommend becoming a Corpsman (HM). There's so much flexibility within the rate, where you can work, who you can work with, where you can be stationed, etc. Definitely talk to your recruiter about it. Good luck!

If you finish college you can go in as an officer and it is MUCH better to go in as an officer.

If you go in before college then you need to take a test when you enter, know math and science for it. One person mentioned to work with nuclear reactor or weapons systems work but I think what I did will take you further. I was an FT now called FC, Weapons control technician (conventional weapons). I learned electronic systems, hydraulic systems and electro-mechanical systems. You can take these skills into many civilian areas plus you get to blow up a lot of stuff. All good if you are lucky enough to miss real action, I wasn’t. Trust me; it is not good to be part of a real action.

Really it depends on what you like/want to do and how you do on the tests. Good luck and get as much of your college done as you can while your in.

If you want to be enlisted, go straight in. If you're going to go to college afterwards, go ROTC and become an officer!

I could tell you some BAD Navy jobs, but if you're an officer you won't need to worry about those...

Hey,
thats a good question.
well, right now im in NJROTC (which is ROTC but in highschool)
and i think the MP (military police)is the best. However,if u enjoy the sea,you may perfure sea duty. All i know is that u dont want to go and be a mechanic because they have to clean up all the crap, its a smelly smelly job.
i think u should enlist now, because they will pay for ur college.
its good for u,and them.
hope u enjoy the Navy.

I'd go NROTC and enter as an officer.

If you want to go in enlisted take the advanced placement tests and see if you qualify for nuclear power or advanced electronics. If you qualify go for it and volunteer for submarines.
