Squamous-cell lung cancer (the American Cancer Society phone person said this was a "smoker's cancer")

Peripheral arterial disease (the arteries in the extremities [arms, legs] quit working and collapse. In advanced cases, the extremity or part of the extremity will appear purple. It is possible to go straight from no symptoms to the advanced form of the disease (unless Mom's complaints in December about her legs' hurting were intermittent claudication). Mom passed away in March of squamous-cell lung cancer, pneumonia and peripheral-arterial disease. (The remedy for advanced peripheral arterial disease is amputation. The doctor didn't think she would survive long enough under anesthesia to do the amputation, so his advice was to take out the CPAP tube and let her go.)

According to some, smoking and second hand smoke are the primary cause of all diseases and accidents and pestilence and even global warming. I wanted to use spell check but it wouldn't work, probably because of smoking.
